It is a fantastic place to live if you are a trust fund kid, or move there with a few million bucks you managed to secure elsewhere with less amenities, or otherwise enjoy servicing those who are. It was bizarre seeing trust fund babies, and street people, and wacked out hippies, when I was there recently engaging in mediations, all shoulder to shoulder. I actually prefer San Luis Obispo. It was less "tense." I took a series of depositions there, and really came to love the town. It helped that I found some friendly folks to keep me warm at night I admit.  Smiley

It's warm and sunny with a lot of rich people, liberals, and smog.

FC, based on the quality of music that you can hear on the main street on a Thursday night in July.

Why it is more Democratic than Ventura and San Luis Obispo is a mystery, although Torie's post explains some of it. It is tainted by its association with Michael Jackson, but thats not the inhabitants fault.

Warm and sunny - Awesome
Rich people - So what?
Liberals - Not in every part of SoCal (Orange County, Riverside, Santa Clarita; even some parts of LA have small reservations of conservatives)
Smog - Eh, you get used to it.  Besides, it's not that bad in places near the ocean.

As for Santa Barbara, it's an all right city.  The only problem is that it's soooo boring.  There is nothing to do there, and I mean nothing.

It's not really a mystery, when you consider what Santa Barbara is (there's a campus of the University of California, for instance) and what San Luis Obispo and Ventura are. Of the three, I've only been to San Luis Obispo. I must go to Santa Barbara sometime.

Tell us everything you know about Santa Clarita. It seems like a cool place.

Suburban Southern California. That's all you need to know.

Santa Barbara has a huge UC campus, yes. But I don't know what Ventura and Obispo are. Ventura is more Hispanic and blue collar than the white bedroom county I used to think it was. Obispo is smaller and more remote.

Ventura's a bit far to be a suburb. SLO really is a quite rural county. The city is fairly small, and there are a lot of small towns scattered along 1 or 101 or the state highways in between.
