Peter Fraser House - Home to the Municipal Socialist Party

Home to the Municipal Socialist Party, and named after Socialist hero and New Zealand wartime Prime Minister, a true hero of the International movement,
Peter Fraser
.
Please discuss policy and elections here. Also please note that all discussions in this building are private. If you are not a member of the MSP, please do not read this thread; it would be against the spirit of the game to do so. At the same time, be aware that strictly confidential discussions between MSP members should occur elsewhere.

Comrades, we seem to be in a pretty good position. There is no chance that we will lose our majority this year and little chance of it eroding in a serious way. Nonetheless, I don't think we want to lose any seats, if we can help it. Councillor Dickinson is highly vulnerable and Councillor Douglas is certainly not safe. There are also several other wards that we should not be complacent in...
Once again, I offer to send activists from Ardthorpe (where we face only token opposition) into marginal wards to help out.
[ooc note: in threads like this, text without "Councillor Whatever" in front of my posts means that it is the GM character speaking]

Councillor S.J. Taylor: I wonder if there's a way of exploiting the dangerous extremism of much of the Conservative group in this election. We are, in this city and this country, a moderate, pragmatic people... I don't think that the electorate is likely to respond well to the sort of blimpish madness so many on the other side seem prone to in this city.

Councillor Courtenay:
Somewhat to my shock, Councillor Taylor has suggested what I believe should be our campaign focus for this election, in a roundabout way as is his wont.
The MSP is a safe pair of hands for Stovesby. We are not extremists who wish to hunt down and eliminate political enemies as many of the conservatives do, and we have a proven track record of ensuring a brighter future for our residents who were not blessed with the circumstances of birth most of our idealogical foes were granted. A strong focus on staying the course, by continuing to reach for equality for all Stovesbyans (Stovesbysiders? Stovesbyites? Stovebynians? Stovesbyers? Stovesbygians? Stovesbyssen? Stovesbytes?) through proven trustworthy councillors, from the City to the Estates and in our heartlands, is the message the people want to hear - because it is the truth.
We should probably do something about all the foreigners entering the town, causing job instability and social discomfort.

Gentlemen,
I was glancing through the
Post
, better known as our towns own Conservative rag, and came across the very interesting bombshell that our own Mr. Thomas appears to be running a strong campaign in St. Johns. I am not following the campaign there much so I now must ask two questions: 1) what are we doing to support his efforts 2) what more can we do to support his efforts?
The area has taken a friendly turn towards our ideology in recent years and there is something symbolic about holding the ward in which town hall stands. We hold the majority, but the Conservatives hold on it is still symbolic of the strength the old order holds in this city, and if we are to keep the momentum this may be the victory we need to focus our efforts on.

Mr Widdowson: Yes, we're helping out Terry; have been since the last election when he did so well. Hardly anyone actually lives there now, of course; not since the bombings during the War. I was surprised that the commissioners decided to keep the ward at the last review.

The Group AGM is tomorrow. Which will also be used to sort players into committees. You will be placed into whichever ones the group leader wants you to go into, but you may make requests here or in private. Private and public requests do not have to match.

Watson: I call to order the Socialist Group AGM for 1956.
I think I can begin with a congratulations; the election last night was a good one. A triumph even. The people of this city have proven that they want this city to be a progressive city. And, so, have voted for the progressive party. Our massive plans to transform Stovesby into a city of light, order and community have been, once again, approved by the public.
Cheers
Regrettably, however, I must also inform you all that due to health concerns I will be scaling back my activities on the council somewhat over the next year. I intend to remain Leader, but will resign my chairmanship of the Public Works Committee. Are there any challengers for the post of Group Leader?
Silence
The we move onto the next item, that of Committee Chairmen. First, General Purposes.

Public Works?
Edit: LOL! I'll just... um... change that name

Councillor Charlton: I nominate Councillor Les Hockley. It is true that Les is rather young. But he has talent, ambition and drive. He believes in changing this city more than most.
Councillor Bailey: I nominate Councillor Taylor. Although we have not always seen eye-to-eye, his understanding of the technical issues that are of such importance to the PWC are second to none. He is also a man who would be acceptable to the entire group.

I have no argument with either candidate, but I think Cr. Taylor is of most value in his current roles. I therefore support the nomination of Comrade Hockey.

Councillor Watson: Hockley has thirty one votes, Taylor seventeen. Councillor Hockley will be the Socialist nominee for chairman of the Public Works Committee.
...
The meeting drags one. All of the senior chairmen are re-elected without opposition. After Bailey's nomination as LEA Chairman went through on the nod, matters turn to the minor committees...
...
Councillor Watson: Watch Committee.

Councillor Charlton: I nominate Councillor Courtenay. He is a man of sound judgment and sensible politics. He has been a loyal servant of the Movement for many years. He understands what this particular committee needs and I think will do well in that role.

Councillor Watson: does anyone wish to nominate an alternative candidate? Councillor Broughton cannot nominate himself, of course. No one? Councillor Courtenay is our nominee for Chairman of the Watch Committee.

Councillor Watson: we turn now to the issue of group officers. Are there challenges to the incumbents? No? Well... that is a little surprising, as I had heard otherwise, but very well. To committee membership then. Councillor Charlton will read out the lists.
Cllr. Charlton does so. Naturally, this takes a while. The list begins with Chairmen...
Councillor Charlton: Councillor Peter Courtenay is our nominee for Chairman of the Watch Committee, and as such will be a member of the Watch Committee and the General Purposes Committee. He will also serve on the Housing Committee and the Public Health Committee.
...
Councillor Alfred Robson is our nominee for Chairman of the Arts & Leisure Committee, and as such will be a member of the Arts & Leisure Committee and the General Purposes Committee. He will also serve on the Stovesby Local Education Authority and on the Finance Committee.
...and continues through the much longer list of backbench councillors...
Councillor Roger Finch has been appointed to the Welfare Committee, to the Watch Commitee and to the Arts & Leisure Committee.
...
Councillor Thomas Murphy has been appointed to the Public Works Committee, to the Finance Commitee and to the Housing Committee.

Gentleman,
Congratulations are in order for all of us upon our victory. May our leadership bring continued prosperity and true representation for those that have not traditionally been spoken for.
OOC: How does committee work proceed from here?
