Obama doesn't become president due to either of the following (you choose):

He doesn't win the nomination, after it becoming a lost cause after Super Tuesday. Hillary Clinton is currently president.

OR

Obama is loses by a slim margin to McCain. John McCain is currently the president and he's made his intentions of only serving one term extremely clear (Palin is eyeing up a possible run).

How would Obama's re-election bid pan out?

Obama wins 61-39%. Despite a poor national environment for the Democrats, Obama remains fairly popular in Illinois and conducts a very active campaign, easily defeating Kirk. BTW, in my scenario Hillary Clinton becomes President in 2009 and does not select Obama as VP (she picks Evan Bayh instead).

No matter which scenario occurs, Obama wins easily.

I doubt Kirk would run against Obama. He might go for Governor though.
