In 1972, Vermont and Georgia voted for the same candidate, Richard Nixon. Before that, last one was Zachary Taylor in 1848.

They will split again in 1976 and 1980, with Georgia supporting their favorite son Jimmy Carter, but then vote together in three straight elections from 1984 to 1992. Now they are split again in last four cycles.

This has to be the longest split between states ever. Maine is almost better since they voted against Georgia from 1840 to 1972, except in 1912 when Wilson benefited from Roosevelt and Taft splitting the Republican vote.

Do you think Vermont and Georgia will vote for the same candidate again in near future and for whom?

If things improve for Obama and he manages to end his term decently, probably in 2012.

Probably not. Vermont and Georgia have grown further and further apart with time.

It would have to be as part of a massive landslide in my opinion. It's much more likely that Georgia just flips to the Dems based on recent results. It was pretty close in 2008.

Vermont swinging to the GOP in the near future is highly unlikely unless the Republicans really transform their image.

But Vermont is still very much ideological rather than partisan (unlike, say, Massachusetts), so it could still vote Republican again if the conditions are just right. Obviously nominating a Southern evangelical or neocon just won't do it.

Johnson could win Vermont if conditions are right.
