Ron Paul wins CPAC straw poll

As the results were displayed on twin large screens in the ballroom – and even before Republican pollster Tony Fabrizio could announce who won – a cascade of boos came down from a crowd that views Paul and his fervent supporters as an irritant. Paul’s supporters responded with cheers, though, when their candidate was then proclaimed by Fabrizio as the winner.

CPAC organizers were plainly embarrassed by the results, which could reduce the perceived impact of a contest that was once thought to offer a window into which White House hopefuls were favored by movement conservatives.

A spokesman for the conference rushed over to reporters following the announcement to make sure they had heard the unmistakable boos when the screen first showed Paul had won the straw poll.

While Palin’s decision not to attend the conference may have impacted her single-digit showing, her modest finish underscores the degree to which she is not seen as a serious presidential contender by the most attuned activists in her own party.

Even though he and his aides sought to downplay the poll, Pawlenty’s finish represents a disappointment for the 2012 Republican who has worked the most aggressively in the last year to make a name in party circles. Besides Romney, Pawlenty is the only potential candidate with the makings of a campaign infrastructure.

That's great, or something, but really... Really... I have a part of me [small part? possibly] that has me thinking... What Americans want a 75 year old man reminiscing about the good old days of George Washington and the Constitution to lead America into the future? The American populace is looking for progress and modernization. We want America to be vibrant and alive. Ron Paul just doesn't offer that. He's conservative on social issues meaning he won't even appeal to a lot of civil libertarians (as I would call myself). The only libertarian qualifications he is that separate him from the pack are opposing the war and PATRIOT Act and torture. These issues are simply not prominent concerns for Americans right now. Americans want to restore economic prosperity and finally reach equality. Paul just doesn't have the set of views that appeal to this group.

Glenn Beck was speaking prior to that (or maybe after) and the Paul supporters weren't planning on watching Beck because of his treatment of Debra Medina. So there were plenty of Romney and few Paul supporters in the room when the were reading the results.

As far Obama vs. Paul, how's that change working out, particularly with the war in Iraq?
