Downgraded to 8.3, which would still place it in the top 20 of recorded earthquakes of all time. The strongest recorded earthquake of all time was in Chile. It was 9.5 in 1960.

50-odd miles from Concepcion places this within the populated parts of Chile.

Not nice. Not nice at all.

The good news, this isn't Haiti. The Chileans are prepared for quakes.

The tsunami is expected to hit HI at 4:19 EST.

Warnings have been issued, with people stocking up on provisions and some beach area hotels evacuating.

Lesser warnings have been issued for CA and parks of AK.

(Hey, Jfern, do be careful.  I know your dorm room probably won't flood, but still be careful.)

This won't be a good start to his presidency.

Yes, but if he responds quickly and effeciently (unlike Bush in 2005 to Katrina), then he will probably get a large boost in his popularity for a time.

On a relevant note, I hope that the Chilean people will be OK after this earthquake.

Damn, it's been upgraded to an 8.8. It ties for the 7th strongest earthquake ever reported. However, it's in a sparely populated area, and so the death count will be low compared to say the Haiti 7.0 that has killed around a quarter million.

Yes,  11:19 AM in HI.  Three meters (just under 10 feet), but that will likely distort closer to land.  Get well away from water and get well above sea-level, like 100-200 feet above sea-level.

There is no warning for earthquakes, but you can see a tsunami coming.  Multiple waves can come in.

If you are there, please be careful.

On a brighter note, many buildings survived in Chile, because of strong building codes.

A 9.5 in 1960, also in Chile, produced a 35 foot tsunami in HI.

French Polynesia had waves ranging from 6 feet to 1/2 foot.

The US Navy has moved ships out of port in HI and San Diego.

Hilo.  I'm watching it live.  It's along the breakwater about a mile out.
