If a bill were to form in Congress in which the government finally ceded that it has no right to define marriage in any way, would Mormons support it or be opposed based on the inclusion of gay marriages?

Well, some fundamentalist sects in the west voted against gay marriage bans in large numbers because it constitutionally restricted the number of people in a marriage to two(one man, one woman), fwiw. But that is kinda different.

No, the LDS church now officially opposes polygamy, and you can be thrown out of the church for it. Just because many have polygamy in their family trees doesn't mean that anywhere near a majority want to bring it back.

The vast majority of Mormons don't believe in polygamy or gay marriage

The 2006 referendum in Arizona suggested otherwise. Even though the Mesa Mormons might not practice polygamy themselves, they seemed pretty put-out by the idea that the Arizona Constitution might ban it ("One man and one woman").

The returns suggest that the conservative group that swung in opposition to the referendum were all in the Mormon areas: Mesa, Taylor/Snowflake, etc. If that's not evidence for continued sympathy for polygamy, I'm not sure what is.

There's a difference between opposition to tightening laws against weirdos who are, however, your own weirdos; and not considering them weirdos at all. A major one.

The FLDS settlements though would vote for such a bill.

Uh, huh......that's their story and they're sticking to it.

The LDS Church wants to distance themselves as far away as they can from polygamist groups. If there's even a suspicion that a member might be practicing polygamy in secret then it will result in a church investigation, and if you're found to be engaging in the practice then you're excommunicated immediately, no ifs, ands, or buts.

I don't think that nearly as many of them actually oppose it as say they oppose it. Most of the historically recent internal policing seems to me to be for the benefit of the nation at large, as well as fulfilling Utah's statehood requirements. I can easily see a situation where, if central authority breaks down, the old ways begin to re-assert themselves gradually.

Officially, yes, I believe so....but there are a couple fundamentalist groups (particularly in the Utah/Arizona border area) where polgamy is very common in practice.

The LDS has. The people who split off from the LDS over the issue a hundred years ago never have.

Well, anyways I guess (hope) that those guys are too marginal to swing Mormons in favor of gay marriage, even if they wanted.

But they're definitely in the minority.

It's not a matter of an official ban which isn't always followed in practice. The LDS Church has no authority over the polygamist sects.

No. However, I would (even though I'm not Mormon).
