The Third Term of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1941 - 1945)
Franklin Roosevelt was sworn in to his third term as President on January 20, 1941. At the time of his inauguration, war raged throughout Western Europe.
Cabinet
Vice President:
Joseph P. Kennedy
Secretary of State:
Quentin Roosevelt I
Secretary of Treasury:
Henry Morgenthau, Jr.
Secretary of War:
Henry L. Stimson
Attorney General:
Francis B. Biddle
Secretary of the Interior:
Harold L. Ickes
Secretary of Agriculture:
Henry A. Wallace
Secretary of Commerce:
Kermit Roosevelt I
Secretary of Labor:
Frances C. Perkins
President Roosevelt won reelection on a pledge not to become involved in any foreign wars. The resolve of this promise remained untested until June of 1941, when Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union, an ally to the United States. Stalin appealed to Roosevelt to declare war on Germany, but Roosevelt refused. Instead he pledged massive amounts of aid to Great Britain and the Soviets.
Throughout the next months the Nazis continued their march into the USSR, forcing the government there to retreat further east. By October of 1941, the Germans had reached the outskirts of Moscow. Stalin remained in the capital city. The battle would continue to rage for months, throughout the winter.
By November, Japanese - American relations had halted. Ambassador Joseph Grew warned President Roosevelt an attack was imminent. On December 7, 1941, the Japanese Navy launched a surprise attack on the United States fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The next day, Roosevelt asked a Joint-Session of Congress for a Declaration of War, stating,
Yesterday, December 7, 1941—a date which will live in infamy—the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.
Congress granted his request, and on December 8, the United States formally declared war on the Empire of Japan. Less than one hour later, the United Kingdom had followed suit. That same day, Japanese forces invaded the Philippines. On December 11, Germany and Italy declared war on the United States.
By the end of January 1942, Japanese forces had captured Manila. On January 26, the first American troops landed in Europe; in Northern Ireland. On February 2, President Roosevelt signed an executive order directing the internment of Japanese Americans and the seizure of their property. By the end of February, General MacArthur and his army had retreated from the Philippines as defenses deteriorated there.
On April 18, Tokyo was bombed by a team commanded by Lieutenant Colonel James Doolittle. The attack succeeded in raising morale throughout the Pacific Islands and the United States. By early May, the colonial government of the Philippines surrendered to Japanese forces.
Throughout May of 1942, the Red Army successfully halted Nazi movements into the USSR. From June 4 to June 7, 1942, the Battle of Midway took place. In a decisive American victory, the American fleet successfully halted Japanese encroachment on American assets, and permanently crippled the Imperial Japanese Navy.
In August, Allied forces invaded the Solomon Islands in the first American counter-offensive against Japanese forces. Allied forces continued to win crucial victories in the Pacific throughout summer and into the fall.
In November, the Soviets began a major counter-offensive against Germany. The tide of the Battle of Stalingrad shifted toward the Soviets, who surrounded German forces in the city.
By February, that battle was over. German forces in Stalingrad surrendered to the Red Army on February 3, 1943. Soon, the Red Army faced little opposition as they took back their conquered land.
Throughout Spring, the War in the Pacific was dominated by the Allies. In Europe, the Soviets were continuously gaining ground on the Germans, with seemingly endless bombings by British and American forces. Meanwhile, the horrors of the Holocaust were just beginning to come to light.
In May, Italian forces in North Africa surrendered to Allied troops. In June, the Allied Invasion of Axis controlled Europe began, with the Invasion of Sicily beginning on June 14, 1943. On July 25, Prime Minister Mussolini was dismissed as Prime Minister by King Victor Emmanuel III and arrested. He was replaced as Prime Minister by Pietro Badoglio.
From May to July, Allied successes in the Pacific continued. On August 3, the PT-109, commanded by Vice President Joe Kennedy's son, Jack, was rammed by a Japanese destroyer and Kennedy was presumed dead. However, he and his crew (with the exception of two members) were later rescued by Solomon Islands natives. Kennedy would be declared a war hero.
By the end of July, Sicily had been conquered by Allied forces. On September 3, Allied forces invaded mainland Italy. Five days later, General Dwight Eisenhower announced the surrender of Italy to Allied forces. On September 12, Benito Mussolini was rescued from captivity by German agents. In October, the newly established government of Italy declared war on Germany.
On November 28, President Roosevelt, Prime Minister Churchill, and Premier Stalin met in Tehran. It was there that they secretly planned the invasion of Nazi Europe, set to take place in 1944.
Domestically, President Roosevelt converted the Works Progress Administration into a new permanent agency (still under the Department of Interior), the Public Works Administration. The goal of the new agency was to construct new infrastructure projects, which were built by private construction companies hiring workers on the open market.
In January of 1944, American troops invaded the Marshall Islands. They captured them just weeks later. American troops continued to defeat Japanese troops in the Pacific, and the Red Army continued to make gains in Europe.
On June 6, 1944, the Invasion of Occupied France began. Operation Overlord, commonly known as D-Day, commenced with the landing of 155,000 Allied troops on the beaches of Normandy in France. The Allied soldiers quickly broke pushed inland in the largest amphibious military operation in history. The operation helped liberate France from Germany, and also weakened Nazi hold on Europe. Meanwhile, the Red Army began their march toward Berlin.
Before the Invasion of France, Former President Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. petitioned his cousin Franklin to allow him to rejoin the Army and lead a group in Normandy. President Roosevelt granted his request and the Former President was reenlisted at the rank of Brigadier General. General Roosevelt led the assault at Utah Beach, landing with the first wave of troops. He was the only General to land in the first wave, which many considered a death mission. However, the Former President survived the battle. He would not survive the war; he died of a heart attack in France on July 12, 1944. His body was flown to Washington, where he received a state funeral and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery, next to his father who had passed away one year earlier at the age of 84.
In the Pacific, American forces invaded Saipan and Guam, quickly capturing both. In Europe, Allied forces continued to make inroads in France, and the Red Army continued their encroachment into Nazi-controlled regions of Eastern Europe.
On July 18, Prime Minister Tojo of Japan resigned his office due to numerous war setbacks. Two days later, an attempt on the life of Chancellor Hitler failed. On August 24, Allied forces liberated Paris from Nazi control.
In October, Allied forces landed in Athens and invaded Germany from both sides. Soviet forces began to push into Germany and toward Berlin.
As the 1944 election drew near, World War II was at it's peak. There was little question that President Roosevelt would seek reelection to a fourth consecutive term.
Democratic Nomination - 1944
Both President Roosevelt and Vice President Kennedy were unanimously nominated as the candidates for President and Vice President, respectively.
Republican Nomination - 1944
The battle for the nomination came down to three strong candidates; Governor Thomas Dewey of New York, Senator Robert Taft of Ohio, and Governor John Bricker of Ohio. Dewey was effectively blacklisted due to his Progressive policies. Ultimately, Senator Taft once again received the nomination, with the Vice Presidential nomination going to Former Governor Harold Stassen of Minnesota.
General Election - 1944
As a wartime President, Roosevelt had an obvious advantage. Taft railed against the "Roosevelt Monopoly", while Roosevelt mostly let his actions win over votes. Ultimately, the President won reelection to his fourth term as President.

The Fourth Term of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1945 - 1949)
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was sworn in to his fourth consecutive term as President of the United States on January 22, 1945. At the time of his inauguration World War II raged throughout Europe and the Pacific, but the tide had turned toward the Allies, who had liberated Poland two days earlier and continued to cut into Japanese territory in the Pacific.
Cabinet
Vice President:
Joseph P. Kennedy
Secretary of State:
Quentin Roosevelt I
Secretary of Treasury:
Henry Morgenthau, Jr.
Secretary of War:
Henry L. Stimson
Attorney General:
Francis B. Biddle
Secretary of the Interior:
Frances C. Perkins
Secretary of Agriculture:
Herbert C. Hoover
Secretary of Commerce:
Kermit Roosevelt I
Secretary of Labor:
Henry A. Wallace
In late January, Auschwitz and Birkenau were liberated by Soviet forces. In February, President Roosevelt met with Prime Minister Churchill and Premier Stalin in Yalta. Notable agreements included allowing Poland to go under the Soviet sphere of influence, an agreement for a Soviet invasion of Japan, and an agreement for a new organization to be formed for international conversation (both the United States and the USSR had pulled out of the League of Nations).
On February 16, Allied forces invaded the island of Iwo Jima. By the end of the month, the Philippines had been liberated by American and Filipino forces. In March, Soviet troops marched into Vienna, liberating Austria. Victory in Europe had become imminent. Soon after, the battle of Okinawa began.
On April 12, 1942, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt died of a stroke at his home in Warm Springs, Georgia. Later that day, Chief Justice Charles Hughes administered the Oath of Office to Vice President Joseph Patrick Kennedy, who was sworn in as the 33rd President of the United States.
The war continued on without Roosevelt. On April 25, President Kennedy attended the founding conference of the United Nations in San Francisco, where he received a standing ovation. Three days later, deposed Italian Prime Minister Benito Mussolini was killed.
On May 2, the Soviet Union announced the fall of Berlin, hoisting the Soviet flag over the Reichstag. The next day, Soviet troops reached the Führerbunker, with Hitler still inside. The cornered Chancellor was beaten by Soviet troops and then shot in the stomach by Georgy Zhukov, the leader of Soviet forces, and left to die. He bled out four hours later.
On May 5, Canadian forces liberated Amsterdam. On May 7, German General Alfred Jodl unconditionally surrendered. The next day, V-E Day was declared.
On June 21, the battle of Okinawa ended. On July 16, the Trinity Test, the first atomic bomb test took place. Five days later President Kennedy authorized the use of the bomb against Mainland Japan. On July 26, Churchill's Conservative Party was reelected to power in the first Parliament elections in the United Kingdom in a decade. That same day, the Potsdam Declaration demanded Japan's unconditional surrender. Japan rejected the Declaration.
Soon leaflets warned the Japanese that fire and brimstone would rain down on their country if they did not unconditionally surrender. The Emperor mocked these claims. However, they proved to be true. The world knew very little of the destruction that would be unleashed upon Hiroshima on August 6. The bombing would kill hundreds of thousands of people. On August 7, President Kennedy announced the successful use of the atomic bomb. That same day, the Soviet Union declared war on Japan. On August 8, another atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki.
On August 14, the Emperor agreed to the terms of the Potsdam Declaration. Victory over Japan is declared on August 15, 1945. On September 2, the Second World War ended with General Douglas McArthur accepting the surrender of all Japanese forces.
In September, Soviet coder Igor Gouzenko defected and revealed that the Soviet Union had an elaborate espionage system throughout the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. This development caused deep disturbances. While President Roosevelt sought friendly connections with the USSR, Kennedy was deeply anti-communist and was deeply angered by this matter.
On October 24, the United Nations was formally founded, with the China, France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States as permanent members of the Security Council. On November 13, General Charles de Gaulle was elected head of the French provisional government.
On December 4, President Kennedy selected Secretary of State Quentin Roosevelt as his Vice President. He was confirmed twelve days later. General George Marshall was chosen to replace him as Secretary of State.
While addressing a Joint Session of Congress on May 17, President Kennedy introduced a plan to counter communism and Soviet expansion. Dubbed the Kennedy Doctrine, he spoke of how the Soviets would only respond to force and that the best way to handle them would be through a long-term strategy of containment. At the same time, President Kennedy introduced the Marshall Plan, a strategy to rebuild Europe after the World War.
On June 20, 1946, President Kennedy was visiting Des Moines, Iowa. After giving a speech at the State Capitol Building, his motorcade departed traveling west on East Grand Avenue. The weather was fair and the convertible top on the vehicle was down. His motorcade crossed the Des Moines River. As his motorcade got off the bridge, it was fired upon by a man standing in the crowds in a small waterfront park. As the motorcade sped off, the President laid wounded in the back of his vehicle. The shooter, Herbert Grotton, was killed by a police officer. The President arrived at Des Moines General Hospital in grave health. He had been shot in the neck, shoulder, and head. The President, who suffered extensive brain injuries, could not be revived and was declared dead at 4:46 P.M. on July 20, 1946, at the age of 57.
The nation and the world was in a state of shock as Quentin Roosevelt swore the oath of office of the President of the United States at the age of 48. President Roosevelt selected Secretary of War Henry Stimson as Vice President. He was confirmed several weeks later. President Roosevelt chose General Dwight Eisenhower to replace Stimson as Secretary of War.
In 1946, President Roosevelt initiated the Marshall Plan. For these efforts to restore war-torn Europe, Secretary of State George Marshall would later be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. In October 1946, President Roosevelt addressed Congress and presented a series of proposed actions in the fields of economic development and social warfare which came to be known as the Fair Deal. In his 1947 State of the Union Address to Congress, Roosevelt stated that "Every segment of our population, and every individual, has a right to expect from his government a fair deal."
In March of 1947, President Roosevelt racially integrated the Armed Forces. In January of 1948, President Roosevelt signed the Housing Act of 1948 into law. The American Housing Act of 1948 was a landmark, sweeping expansion of the federal role in mortgage insurance and issuance and the construction of public housing.
In June of 1948, President Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act of 1948 into law. The act extended coverage of social security and raised the minimum wage. These benefits appealed to both the middle-class and working-class Americans.
In June of 1948, the Berlin Blockade began. President Roosevelt replied to the Soviet block by flying supplies in hourly. For his actions in the blockade and his implementation of the Marshall Plan, President Roosevelt was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1948.
On July 17, 1948, the British Dominion of Newfoundland voted 52% to 48% in favor of annexation into the United States. Prime Minister Winston Churchill completed the transaction, after the United States Treasury wired 200,000,000 dollars in bonds, gold, and money to the United Kingdom, with 80,000,000 being wired every year until 1958. Newfoundland officially became an American territory on August 19, 1948. At the same time, President Roosevelt pushed for further mandates of healthcare. By 1948, 71% of Americans had health insurance.
As the 1948 elections drew near, President Roosevelt remained exceptionally popular. After Kennedy's assassination, most of his initiatives were relatively unopposed. The President was portrayed as a hero to the European people, and a strong leader.
Democratic Nomination - 1948
President Quentin Roosevelt and Vice President Henry Stimson both were overwhelmingly nominated for President and Vice President, respectively.
Republican Nomination - 1948
The battle for the nomination came down to four candidates; Governor Harry Kelly of Michigan, Senator William Knowland of California, House Majority Whip Leslie C. Arends of Illinois, and Senator Robert Taft of Ohio. After an intense battle, Leslie Arends received the nomination for President with Senator Knowland as his Vice Presidential nominee.
General Election - 1948
President Roosevelt entered the election as a hero-like figure. After the deaths of Presidents Roosevelt and Kennedy, he maintained the popularity to pass Progressive policies, which in hence increased his popularity with the American population. Against two relative unknowns, President Roosevelt won reelection in what was at the time the most lopsided election in American history.
Roosevelt/Stimson: 519
Arends/Knowland: 12

I'm not saying they will all become states. A few will though. In the event they become states, I'll just have to add the electoral votes manually.

OK, I just lost all my progress, and I had about a page, so...Here's a rundown...
Quentin Roosevelt sends troops into China. Mao Zedong is killed, the Republic of China wins the war.
Vice President Henry Stimson resigns in 1949 for health reasons. He is replaced by Senator Harry S. Truman of Missouri.
North Korea invades South Korea. Fighting begins, with the United States and China assisting South Korea. Eventually, Kim Il Sung is forced into hiding, and he is killed. Korea is united under capitalism.
When Fulgencio Batista tries to take control in Cuba, Roosevelt demands he step down. Batista refuses, and American forces are sent in. The next day, the democratically elected President Carlos Prio Socarras is brought back to power, and Batista is exiled.
President Roosevelt's second term was mostly focused on the Chinese Civil War and the Korean War, but he also expands the public school system and increases health care mandates.
In the Democratic nomination, Roosevelt and Truman win.
In the Republican nomination, Robert Taft gives it one last go and pulls out the nomination, defeating Earl Warren. He selects Richard Nixon as his running mate.
In the General Election, the Roosevelt's are, as always, unstoppable; Quentin wins reelection.
So basically, China and Korea are capitalist. YAY
I'll post the map tomorrow, but I'm pretty pissed about this. I worked on and off all day on that update, and I accidentally pressed refresh...It's gone.
Roosevelt/Truman: 469
Taft/Nixon: 62

Ouch. Sorry to hear that dude. I'm sure your update was great! Anyway, my advice would be to write your updates in a word document on your computer and then copy and paste each update into the forum as needed. That's what I'm doing for my Rocky in 1968 TL.

Thats not a bad idea...Good idea actually. I'll try it.
Anyways, I was surprised to see just how much the world would be different if the Chinese Revolution had turned out different. There would be no North Korea, no PRC, Truman made a bad move by not taking out Chairman Mao and his buddies.

Yeah, my interpretation was that any son of Teddy Roosevelt would have a looser trigger finger than Truman. Teddy taught his sons the value of a strong military, and in this one Quentin successfully contains the Korean War because he stopped the communists in China.
I was really enjoying writing it. That was why I was so angry when I messed up.
Anyways, new update coming up sometime tonight.

The Third Term of President Quentin Roosevelt I (1953 - 1957)
President Quentin Roosevelt was sworn in to his third term as President on January 20, 1953. At the time of the inauguration, the United States was experiencing a time of prosperity, while in Asia capitalism bloomed.
Cabinet
Vice President:
Harry S. Truman
Secretary of State:
George C. Marshall
Secretary of Treasury:
Herbert H. Lehman
Secretary of War:
Dwight D. Eisenhower
Attorney General:
Thomas E. Dewey
Secretary of the Interior:
Frances C. Perkins
Secretary of Agriculture:
Kermit Roosevelt I
Secretary of Commerce:
Herbert C. Hoover
Secretary of Labor:
Robert M. La Follette, Jr.
On March 1, 1953, Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin suffered a stroke, and died six days later. Western governments began to wonder whether the Communist Party could sustain itself in the Soviet Union after their defeats in China and Korea. Shortly after Stalin's death, the Soviet Union launched a buildup of nuclear weapons.
The "Cold War" continued as the Communist Party began to recover in the Soviet Union. In Iran, the United Kingdom asked for American assistance in launching a coup against the democratically elected leader of Iran. Quentin Roosevelt, whose father was staunchly for the rights and liberty of all nations, opposed overthrowing a democratically elected government. Instead, President Roosevelt attempted to negotiate the end of the nationalization of the oil industry in Iran, ultimately succeeding in allowing American, British, and Iranian private corporations to drill for oil in Iran, with increased tariffs to compensate (under threat of invasion).
On August 8, 1953, the Soviet Union announced they had successfully tested a hydrogen bomb. President Roosevelt responded by beginning a stockpiling of nuclear weapons.
On May 17, 1954, the United States Supreme Court ruled that the segregation of schools was unconstitutional, in the case Brown vs. Board of Education. In the following month, the world's first nuclear power station opened in Virginia.
In early 1955, President Roosevelt announced plans to develop nuclear armed InterContinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs) capable of reaching the Soviet Union. Shortly after, the Soviet Union announced a similar plan.
On May 5, 1955, West Germany declared it's sovereignty. Ngo Dinh Diem proclaimed Vietnam to be a republic with himself as its President.
On December 1, 1955, secretary Rosa Parks was arrested in Montgomery, Alabama, for refusing to give her bus seat to a white passenger. This is widely seen as the launch of the Civil Rights Movement in America.
Throughout 1954 and 1955, Soviet leaders began attacking Joseph Stalin's reputation and image. Stalin became seen as bad for the preservation of the Soviet Union as a superpower.
On July 26, 1956, the government of Egypt nationalized the Suez Canal, gathering international condemnation. On October 29, 1956, Israel invaded the Sinai Peninsula and pushed Egyptian forces back toward the Suez Canal. Two days later, the United Kingdom and France began bombing Egypt. On November 7, The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution calling for the United Kingdom, France, and Israel to withdraw their troops from Arab lands immediately. Eventually, President Roosevelt's administration was able to negotiate a ceasefire to the conflict.
On October 25 of 1956, Explorer 1 was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida. It was the first artificial satellite ever launched by humanity. The project began in 1951. The Soviets soon responded in 1953, by launching the Sputnik Program, which launched Sputnik 1 in 1957.
Through 1956, President Roosevelt continued to gradually increase Social Security and health care coverage. By the end of Roosevelt's second term in 1957, 76% of Americans had health insurance.
In 1956 and early 1957, President Roosevelt signed several bills promoting conservation and protecting the environment. Among them were the National Wild and Scenic River System Act of 1956, the Wilderness Act of 1956, the Endangered Species Act of 1956, and the National Trails Act of 1957.
As the election of 1956 drew near, President Roosevelt decided not to seek a third election as President. However, the President remained tremendously popular, and his policies in Asia are seen even by contemporary historians as having an immense positive impact on the Modern World.
Democratic Nomination - 1956
The public gathered that the nomination would go to Vice President Harry Truman in 1956. However, when the Vice President decided not to seek the nomination and rather run for Governor of Missouri, the race heated up. The main candidates were Governor Adlai Stevenson of Illinois and Senate Majority Leader Lyndon Johnson of Texas. After an intense primary contest, Governor Stevenson narrowly won the Democratic nomination. He chose Secretary of Labor Robert La Follette, Jr. as his running mate, and he was nominated at the convention for Vice President.
Republican Nomination - 1956
The Republican nomination proved to be a battle. The main candidates were Senator Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin, Governor Richard Nixon of California, and Senator Robert Todd Lincoln Beckwith of Illinois. After a fierce primary fight, Senator Joseph McCarthy secured the nomination. He selected Senator John Dulles of New York as his running mate.
General Election - 1956
Governor Stevenson was a relative unknown as the campaign began. In contrast, Senator McCarthy had a sometimes radical reputation. However, with President Roosevelt campaigning vigorously for Stevenson, he was able to secure a win against Senator McCarthy.
Stevenson/La Follette: 304
McCarthy/Dulles: 227
