Truman still gets renominated in 1948. However, Ike decides to run and wins the GOP nomination. Senator Robert Taft of Ohio decides that Ike is not conservative enough and decides to run as an Independent. Who would win this election in a threee way race? You pick the VPs. Discuss, with maps.

Eisenhower wins due to his popularity, and Taft splitting the vote wins him 4 states. Truman is stuck with the south, except NC which goes to Eisenhower.

Eisenhower/Dewey- 313
Truman/ Barkley- 140
Taft/Bricker- 78

Vote-splitting amongst conservatives and moderates = Truman landslide

This would all have to depend on the status of Taft's campaign (running mate, campaign funds, media, etc etc etc.)

Unfortunately, it would be hard for him to win any states.
