Boy, is that polarized...
Just one red precinct surrounded by the Blues, not a single blue precinct in Red Country...

If you could find one word to describe Shelby Co... Polarized is it!

This is a map (with 2002 rather than 2000 precincts) of African-American population in the county (more Cyan=more AA)  Notice the similarities Sad

Thanks -- It would be possible for me to do a statewide precinct map for the 2000 results... I've got the 2000 precinct maps for each county but the results on the TNEC website are broken down by precinct with Early Voting separated out.  I'd have to get the results with Early Voting included in each precinct total for it to be more accurate.

You are also right that it is depressing... as Bush lost Shelby Co. in 2000 Sad

Question: why is Memphis/Shelby County worse than just about everywhere else for racial voting?

htmldon - does your data for Shelby County have early and absentee ballots allocated to the precincts?  If so, where did you find it?
Thanks,
Dave

Al,

This is nothing!  In state/federal elections, you'll find a few whites (see the midtown area) who will vote Democrat.  In county elections, its totally polarized.

Dave,

Yes - I have printouts from the Shelby Co. Election Commission with combined (E-day, EV, and Absentee) data for this race as well as the 2002 Senate and Gubenatorial races.

That would be great to get - might finally be able to determine who won the 8th congressional district.  I can't remember how many precincts are split between districts, but it would produce significantly more accurate numbers.

I'd be happy to do Suffolk county, my home county, but I do not know where to find the precinct data or the precinct map for Suffolk.  Can anyone help?

Don, I integrated your map into the site - (with credit) - on the Shelby County 2000 page (I added some additional code and infrastructure to support precinct maps on individual county and data pages).  Let me know if you would prefer that I not include your map here.

Miamiu - Suffolk County, NY is also very interesting - I am also interested in precinct-level data (1992, 1996, and 2000) in order to calculate results by congressional district - the board of elections for Suffolk County is in Yaphank... how far from there do you live?  There are a lot of precincts in Suffolk County, so it would be a significant effort to digitize all the data.

Yaphank is pretty far away from Melville, which is where I am.  It is 'out east' as we say, but it is way out east, way past Islip.  It's probably an hour and a half's drive.

You have to know a little about GIS in order to use this:

You can download Tiger line data in shapefile format from
http://arcdata.esri.com/data/tiger2000/tiger_download.cfm

You choose the state, then the county, then choose to download the voting districts 2000 layer.  That will give you a zip file and inside that zip file is a .shp (shapefile, the map itself), a .dbf(database with info corresponding to the shapefile) and another file that you just need to put with the other two.

Put these three files into a folder and you can open the shp file with ArcExplorer - http://www.esri.com/software/arcexplorer/index.html

You can go into the dbf file with Excel and add a field for each candidate and then put the results in for each precinct.  You can then open up the SHP file and use the legend to view your data on the maps.

Where do you get all these maps from?

Whoa, that program is confusing. So do you and Dave make the maps using software? I've made a few but I used paint.

I've tried looking for precinct data for my county, but its not on the internet and they charge money for it. And my county has 2700 precincts...

Now only if someone could do that for Bucks County (Montgomery, Delaware and Chester) would be nice too >P

You and your fancy software Don.
