From what I remember it was 7. Then again that was 4 years ago so I don't remember that well.

7 periods a day from 9th to 11th, then in 12th they transitioned to an 8 period block schedule, with all 8 periods on Monday, then 4-period block days Tuesday-Friday.

Block Scheduling with four 85-minute classes and a weird 7-minute break between classes.  Add to that a 53 minute lunch and 7 minute transition to 3rd period.

It sure made the times all jacked up.  The first period was 7:55-9:20, second 9:27-10:52, lunch 10:52-11:46, 3rd period - 11:53-1:18, and 4th period 1:25-2:50.  They did not give any credence to the numbers on a clock as every minute was fair game.

Now, it's completely screwed up.  Some kids will have 2 periods, lunch, and 2 more periods while other kids will have 3 periods, lunch, and 1 more period.

Most classes were semester-long courses, with some nine-week courses, and your music classes were year-long courses.  I was in the band which was first period, so i had the same first period all three years of high school (at the time, high school didn't start until 10th grade).  In the fall during marching band season, I had to be there at 7:30 and didn't get out until 9:20.  Some schools around the state had to be at school at 6:00 for band.  Not to mention, for band students, their school year begins the third week of July for what is known as "summer band" to get a head start on the drill and the music.  Now, during concert season which always started after the last football game, we didn't have to come in until 7:55.

My high school has since lengthened the school day by 15 minutes and shortened breaks from 10 minutes to 7 minutes so that every class can be 90 minutes long.

Still, 7 minutes is hardly enough if you have class on opposite ends of the building.  They wanted to ban carrying your backpack around with you.. but I think there was enough student opposition.. so I guess kids could just carry their books around with them all day.

10 minutes? That's almost as long as brunch is. We get 5 minutes between classes. It was 3 in middle school.

We don't have ticky tack schools here built out of wood and plastic all separated into various buildings.

My high school was 400,000 sq. ft. and the roof took up 7 acres.  You have to hoof it to make it form one end of the building to the other in 5 minutes.

7 periods a day, but you only had to take 6 unless you were in orchestra, and some lazy seniors only took 5.

First period started at 7:12 am. That was complete hell.

Well... it replaced a piecemeal 80 year old building that was meant for about 1600 students but had served as many as 2500 (back in the 70s when 7th and 8th grade were in there as well)... so they wanted a school that could grow.

There were about 80 classroom teachers and they thought they should build the school so every teacher had their own room... plus they built teacher planning centers in each department so teachers had their own lounge and office area there, so that when the school grows, teachers will shuffle classrooms and they can increase capacity by 25% without adding on to the school.

We also have a huge athletics program, so they put in an Olympic sized pool and a massive weight room as well as a full court sized gym that can split into three small gyms for classroom purposes.

The music/theater departments are massive at the school, so they put in a 1200 seat auditorium (most concerts are still standing room only) also so they could market to various venues that come to town (which makes the school money).

Plus being way up in the northwoods where industrial tech is a huge deal (I wouldn't be surprised if my high school had one of the largest industrial tech programs in the nation) they built a 3-stall autobody shop, welding shop, 2 wood shops, small machines shop, as well as CAD and traditional drafting rooms...

Having all that makes it a big school.  But our school isn't really big compared to schools of similar size in the state.  Extracurricular activities are big here and communities are willing to fund them.

Didn't you go to Eden Prairie?  Or did you go to Wayzata?  Or where?

We had 3 lunches.. it made it kinda odd for the 2nd lunch having to split class in half.

Correct.  The vastly superior of the two... absolutely... identical... schools... um...

Well, they did have a better quiz bowl team than us Sad  But our math team was better Smiley

Lunch counted as a period, so seven periods.

I like block scheduling a lot more, actually. Except for maybe language classes, which should meet as often as possible, having a two-hour period gives the teacher more time to have a complete lesson. Having only 4 classes a day also means less homework and you always have at least two nights to do homework for a class.

But it makes it less easy to get periods off and leave campus.

Not really. Plenty of people senior year had off periods (you could only have them in senior year) and it just meant you got 2 hours off every other day instead of 1 hour every day. People who had first period off didn't come to school until 10am some days and people with 8th off could leave at like 1pm.
