The map is of districts of India by religion. Obviously Hindus are to be orange and Muslims green, but what other colors should I use?

Also, East Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh has exactly 70,000 Christians. Odd.

Christians - Blue or purple, whatever looks better.
Buddhists - I'm thinking red.
Sikhs - Yeah, I guess yellow is left.

Are there any Jain districts?

Umm, Hindus should be Saffron. Thanks.

Also, Jains should be pink if there are any Jain majority/plurality districts.

Just a strange coincidence. Then again, they possibly did not count some people.

Maybe he could make Western Christians Blue and Eastern Christians (ie Oriental Orthodox and St. Thomas Christians) Purple. For Jains, maybe dark red, if Buddhists are bright red.

I've usually used a crimson for Christians in religious maps, fwiw. With Sikhs you can just use a different shade of orange.

If such data were being collected.

If the distinction mattered all that much.

I will be restarting this endeavor sometime soon. The source data is here, if anyone wants to see it.

Why not wait another year or so and use the 2011 Census data?

Also... Buddhists maroon, of course. Animists... white? (There won't be any Jain districts of course, but there will be "other" districts in Arunachal Pradesh.)

Why not wait another year or so and use the 2011 Census data?

Given the number of districts that aren't listed in the 2001 Census, that makes sense.

You are a hero (and a much better person than me).

Stray observations:

The Muslim areas are interesting. Of course there's Kashmir and Murshidabad in Bengal and portions of Assam (my ancestral homeland is in the green parts of Assam). Malappuram District in Kerala is almost 70% Muslim, though; I knew there were lots of Muslims in Kerala, but I didn't realize they were concentrated in any one place.

Also, what's going on in Lohardaga and West Singhbhum in Jharkhand? What Others could there possibly be?

I'm somewhat surprised that Arunachal Pradesh isn't more Buddhist, considering its links to Tibet; or is it significantly Bön or something?

I didn't know there was a large christian community in Assam. Where does in come from ? Were there missionaries or something like that ?

They are American missionaries. Similar areas exists in Burma. Population wise  the Christians in other areas may be larger although.

The next interesting map would be the map of second largest group.
