Actually former Presidents Ford, Carter, Bush, and Clinton have all said that a single six-year term would be better than our current system of two four-year terms.

Carter endorsed this idea when he was running for re-election in 1980.  Somebody at the time (I wish I could remember who) said "the best argument against a six-year presidential term is sitting in the White House right now."  For that reason, I oppose the idea.

How about the seventh of the seven amendments proposed by the Hartford Convention in 1814?
"The same person shall not be elected President of the United States a second time; nor shall the President be elected from the same State two terms in succession."

it's arbitrary.  why is this better, or worse, than two 6-year terms?

You can find them here but I'll go ahead and summarize them.

The first would have removed slaves from being included when considering the apportionment of Representatives and direct taxes.

The second, forth, and fifth would have increased to two-thirds of both Houses the support needed to admit new States, interdict foreign trade, or declare War (save when invaded).

The third would have limited to sixty days the amount of time a ship could be forced to remain in a port.

The sixth would have made citizens naturalized after the amendment was adopted ineligible to be a Congressman or hold a civil office under the United States, so no Sec. of State Kissenger or Albright for example.

I don't have a problem with term limits per se, but if you are going to have them for Presidents, congressional terms should be limited as well.

I don't know... It's one of those issues that makes sense one minute, and then doesn't the next.
