Similar to my last topic about "Read my lips, no new taxes" which was Bush's tide changing quote in 1988 to help him win, but also was the beginning of his undoing, this time I'd like for you to think of one quote that the Republican Nominee in 2012 will say at the convention that might change the tide and help him or her defeat Obama?

One thing I learned from Hot Tub Time Machine is that the world moves faster than it did in the 80s!  I think the tide turner and regret for it will both happen within the same season this time.  The Republican winner will be cornered into making some strong statement in the Rightward-moving scrum of the primary  that Obama successfully uses to hurt him or her in the general.

(And if Huckabee runs we'll see another throwback to the 88 campaign.)

... is one stock phrase going to defeat a President who has peace and a robust economy to fall back upon?

The phrase must:

1. Be a pleasing platitude (as in , "Read my lips -- no new taxes!" (George H.W. Bush(, "A car in every garage and a chicken in every pot!) H. Hoover, or "Yes, we can! (you-know who).

2. Be ambiguous so that people read into it whatever they want to read into it.  It must be mystical yet concrete. See above.

3. Be memorable for the right reasons. Goldwater's "Extremism" quip was an immediate disaster.

4. Attract contempt from so-called "elitists" while tugging at the heartstrings of the unsophisticated.
