They already did, duh...

No seriously, I could see a person of Israeli, Palestinian, or Syrian descent being elected quite soon.

Kenya is not part of the Middle East--it is a part of Sub-Saharan Africa.

haha. Even though I could see him living that long, considering that his mom died 2 weeks before her 100th birthday.

Oh man.  2 weeks shy.  Reminds me of Obama's grandma dying the day before he was elected president.

I don't know if Nader will be lucky enough to make it to 100 but I wouldn't be surprised if he's running for president when he goes.

I hope Nader lives to 100.

As a side note, this lady died one DAY before her 100th birthday. That sucks.

Now, could you please answer my question seriously?

Um...thanks for the geography lesson?  I'm aware of the location of Kenya; it's satire.

Well, I was unsure if maybe you were referring to someone else other than Obama. I know all our Presidents before Obama were of European descent, but I was wondering if maybe you were implying one of them had a little Middle Eastern descent as well.

Isn't Mitch Daniels Syrian?

Like I said, being Syrian, Israeli (well, maybe Israeli), or Palestinian (well, maybe, but not much) wouldn't really hurt a campaign.

As long as it's a Mediterranean region of ancestry, I don't see it as a problem.

What if the candidate is Jordanian, Saudi, Emirati, Yemeni, Omani, Qatari, Bahraini, Kuwaiti, Iraqi, Georgian, Armenain, Azerbijani, or Iranian?

Jordanian - Distantly, perhaps
Saudi - No
Emirati - Perhaps, the Emirates are becoming very westernized
Yemeni - I don't think so, but more likely than Saudi
Omani - No
Qatari -  See Emirati
Bahraini - See Qatari
Kuwaiti - I wouldn't say likely, but not impossible
Iraqi - No
Georgian - It wouldn't be a problem
Armenian - It wouldn't be a problem
Azerbijani - No
Iranian - More likely than Emirati, provided they are of the Jewish or Christian minorities (which is unlikely)

A Maronite could easily be elected, but that doesn't mean one will be (we've never had an Italian President, for instance).

I agree. Some groups could easily be elected, yet never had the chance to do so. Even though if Cuomo ran in 1992, he might have very well won the Presidency.

I think most breakthroughs will follow Obama's example and be mutts.  There are more mutts these days anyways.  Except gender.  The first woman president will be 100% woman.  Actually, I'm kidding but she probably will have a partially masculine temperament.  I'll say... in 2016, each party will have a Middle-Eastern descendant in the primary: Mitch Daniels and Alan Khazei.

As long as they are Christian, there will be no problem in getting elected.

There's not many good candidates but a good list of any possibles would be:

Ralph Nader (G)
Ray LaHood (R)
John E. Sununu (R)
Spencer Abraham (R)
John Baldacci (D)
Charles Boustany (R)
Mitch Daniels (R)
Chris John (D)
Mary Rose Oakar (D)
Nick Rahall (D)

Heck, we have yet to elect a Polish-American President.

Technically, about anyone of aristocratic lineage has some Arabic origin through a daughter of the Emir of Cordoba marrying into Spanish royalty whose descendants married into French, English, Italian, and German nobility.

Thomas Jefferson had very, very distant Phoenician ancestry.

If the candidate were Armenian or Georgian it wouldn't be a big deal as they are mostly considered eastern European. We almost had an Armenian VP when Bush Sr came close to choosing CA governor George Deukmejian.
