Perhaps because the ACLU is a hypocritical organization that is selective about which liberties it seeks to protect?

They did defend Rush Limbaugh.

What would happen if the ACLU merged with the Cato Institute?

They should; they're both phony self-appointed defenders of liberty.

The Nazi's were quite Right-Wing. They had a fetish for war, had unrepentant Militaristic tendencies, used Christianity to give Hitler a prophet like status among the German people, abhors dissension from the Government's leadership, and of course supported torture of their enemies. Arguably the same Nativist Theocratic nonsense spouted out from today's modern Right. Conservative? No. Right-Wing? Absolutely.

None of those things are inherently "right-wing."

The Nazis were nationalists and religious, therefore they were right-wing.

If you count neo-Paganism as the "right-wing" religion, perhaps.

The ACLU has addressed why they don't go out of their way on the gun issue.  There's a powerful, quite well-pocketed lobby that has the gun issue covered: the National Rifle Association.  The people the ACLU defends aren't anywhere near as well-heeled as the gun-manufacturers of America: Nazis, pedophiles, and Klansmen don't tend to be the most pecunious Americans.  Nevertheless, their rights need to be protected.

Except the NRA doesn't do a good job defending gun rights as an issue of liberty. The relatively small Gun Owners of America is the only real nationwide organization defending gun rights.
