These are all the American versions of salad dressing.

If you're not American, then explain your favorite kind or what is common where you live.  This is not, however, a thread for anybody to pop in with some dumb comment about how "their country has the proper dressing because (insert arbitrary.. hrhrhr I'm not American and obviously their salad dressing is inferior because it's American! LAWLERSKATES!!!") (this is particularly directed at the English and Australians... Canadians, and non-English Brits will be afforded some leeway)

There are no superior salad dressings, only different ones.

For me personally:  Blue cheese and French.  French being smooth, red, ketchup/sugar/vinegar/herb based deliciousness and blue cheese... the chunkier and more potent.. the better.

Vinegar, olive oil and salt is usually what I do, but I love, love, love blue cheese. It just is pretty fattening.

Hmm, there are few salad dressings I dislike. If I'm having the typical American style salad(iceberg lettuce, cheese, black olives, mushrooms, onions, etc) I reach for Blue Cheese or French/Catalina. If I'm having a Greek salad I prefer a vinegarette. I like French dressing on potatoes, and Thousand Island on sandwiches.

If I had to pick one, I go with French.

This is okay sometimes.. like if you're having the salad with a spring meal.. but I like all the things that make salad unhealthy... my perfect salad is

lettuce, a little tomato, lots of red onion, shredded carrot, lots of croutons, shredded cheese, some artichoke hearts, sunflower seeds, bacon crumbles, chopped up chicken or ham, and a mix of blue cheese and french dressing.

I make my own- Old Bay Vinagrette:

Olive Oil (EVOO preferably), Vinegar, pinch of dijon mustard, oregano, lemon juice, and Old Bay Seasoning.

Awesome with any seafood as the protein.

Oil and Vinegar, although I really normally eat anything other than Ranch (nothing against Ranch, it's just not my favorite, but I still like it).

Vinaigrettes mostly.  My favorite right now is a raspberry one, though I always like trying new kinds.

If I'm ever eating fast food and order a salad, I usually get Italian as that's the only cheapo dressing that is tolerable.

Ranch is crap and its popularity in this country is inexplicable.  I'd rather eat the salad plain.

Caesar, Italian or French, sometimes Russian.

I hate vinegar on salads.
