Glenn was not Dukakis.

John Glenn/Sam Nunn:  309
George Bush/Dan Quayle:  229

Without a gaffe machine like Dukakis, Glenn would focus on Iran-Contra and mistrust of the government.  He would select a foreign policy expert like Sam Nunn, who would destroy Quayle in a debate.  Glenn, a respected American hero, would win.

I'm just wondering, but how come Glenn didn't run in RL in 1988?

He might not have wanted the office.  Still, it would make a great TL.

He was only three years older than Bush.

As for the Keating 5, he was cleared of all wrong doing.  I mean, if Bush could deflect Iran-Contra, I think Glenn could deflect his own minor scandal.

Yes, but even Bush was seen as "old" by the public, and I'm aware of him being cleared of all wrong-doing, but that's still not the kind of thing one would want next to their name.

Oh don't get me wrong, I think it would hurt him substantially, but I think he would be able to win.

Reagan had alot of influence over that election in terms of getting out the base. How old was John Glenn in 1988?

67, just 3 years older than Bush Sr. and 6 years younger than the age Reagan was in 1984 (when he was reelected).

I don't know much about John Glenn other than he was an astronaut. In 1988 I was 3.
