Won't happen, but that'd be kind of neat...

The chances of a chief justice becoming president in today's age are extremely small.

Agreed, the chief justice stays for life, the presidency is only 4 or 8 short years.

Almost any Chief Justice that runs for President now is just an idiot. It really doesnt make sense also. He would have to resign his position before even forming an exploratory committee. Take a chance at the nomination, and going in the general election to become President for 4 or 8 years, when someone like Roberts could stay Chief Justice for the next few decades.

In his case, he could be there for the next 40 years...which is a frightening thought.

As useful idiot said, it won't happen, but it would be interesting to have a William Taft in reverse, for Roberts to ascend from the chief justice to the presidency. Then again as Lunar says, Roberts probably likes his current job already (and he likely prefers it to the presidency), and besides, it would let Obama appoint a new chief justice, which probably isn't what he would want. Obviously I'd rather him stay chief justice for exactly the same reason, not to mention that Roberts probably wouldn't win, and if he did win, he would serve for 8 years at most, whereas he could stay chief justice for life.

He'd have to resign as chief justice for the chance at the presidency too.

And even if he got it, he'd be forced to deal with crazy politics, criss-crossing the nation campaigning, special interests controlling the mechanisms for him to move forward, etc.

I'm no fan of Roberts, I've never heard of a court case where he didn't rule in favor of the man (unitary executive, corporations, etc.) but the idea that he would or could mount a GOP primary  bid for the presidency is almost laughable.  Far more likely, yet still unlikely, that he could be considered for a VP slot or something that would be a guaranteed possibility.

I mean, in terms of likeliness, this is probably less likely than Obama not running for reelection and Tim Kaine winning the presidency.

There's absolutely no reason why he would.

Roberts isn't that bad. I admire him for his opposition to abortion (and gay marriage).

That was a rhetorical question.

FTR, Hughes was Associate Justice in 1916, not Chief Justice, and he had to resign.

That's true, he doesn't need to be president to make a difference in this country. Plus it's not very healthy for someone in that position to go from that office to president. It's highly unprofessional to go from judicial branch to another branch. Going from the House or Senate to the White House is sketchy enough.

President Warren Burger? (Mmmm... Burger)

Quote

Burger in '72 is pretty implausible. More plausible is Gerald Ford refusing the vice presidency for some reason, and Nixon appointing Burger Vice President to succeed Agnew. Then when Nixon resigns, Burger becomes president.

How is it unprofessional to leave the judicial branch to go to anothe branch?  And how is going from the House/Senate to White House "sketchy"?

When you are a judge, you are above partisan politics. Otherwise you're embarrassing to the judicial branch. As for the white house, you would have to defend your decisions as a judge and I can only imagine how hard that would be. Someone would be better off as a trial attorney for health insurance companies.
