True, and Gilbert famously got the inspiration for the show when he saw a Japanese sword hung on a wall drop to the ground.  Slice

Come to think of it, it was a sword:

Then, in the next verse, they refer to it as a saber (well, a "sabre," those crazy Brits and their spelling).

Sorry to double-post, but it got me looking at the libretto and remembering how much I love this scene:

Mikado. (looking at paper) Dear, dear, dear! this is very tiresome. (to Ko-Ko) My poor fellow, in your anxiety to carry out my wishes you have beheaded the heir to the throne of Japan!

In his defence, Einzige was one of the five most influential posters on here. The mods just didn't realise it.

Luftwaffe Heinreich has flown for the last time.  Sad  Don't worry, though.  Gustaf will marry Libertas at the end of Act II and all will be fine.  Happy ending.  Smiley

I have to say, one of the unexpected perks of being a mod is being able to read deleted posts.  The Luftwaffe Heinreich one is one of my private joys.

Epic disapprove. The Mikado is incapable of ruling over anything, at least without a large group of advisorsy mandarins.

The fruit or the language group?

the fruity bureaucrats.

He seems to love his new job as moderator, and folks who love what they do, get bonus points in my book. A happy person tends to be a nicer person. Who knew? Smiley
