One of the possible Republican Candidates who hasn't been mentioned much is Fred Thompson. Could he run, and could he win?

Discuss.

It was pretty clear he had no interest in being elected the last time around but obviously I'd support his sure to be hilarious involvement in the race.

No, and I would not vote for him, either.

Fred Thompson is a man after my own heart: he has absolutely no interest in the insane workload required to become President of the United States (let alone actually hold the office).  As someone that knows that I could never handle a presidential campaign, I salute him.  Only insane workaholics like Obama or Romney have the nerve to handle the campaign (a reason why I highly doubt Sarah Palin could survive the primaries...she could barely survive 8 weeks of national campaign, let alone 2 years).

After disappointing as many Republican voters as he did in 2008, I don't think Fred would run again, and if he did, I don't think he'd go far at all.

I highly doubt I'd support him. Not because I don't like him, but because he was far to half-hearted in 2008.

He just got into the race too late. I don't remember him entering until after Christmas. Also, how old is he?

He had pretty good numbers when he started, but they steadily dropped over the long stretch until the primaries began. If anything, he got in too early.

That's not too bad. Would you have voted for him in the primaries? I'm curious since you're from the south.

no...because he didn't try in 2008 so there's zero hope for a political future for him (via election)

Fred Thompson was a flip flopper and switched his positions and it showed in the South Carolina debate.  He voted for campaign finance reform and was a reform minded politician until he retired and became ultra conservative in the GOP primary. I don't think people believed him back then and believe in him now and no he shouldn't run, its Romney's nomination to lose at this point. Whoever runs other than him would be vying for the VP slot.

Maybe he just wanted the experience before he retired from politics.

He had his chance in 2008 and showed that he was no Ronald Reagan. That's about what any Republican nominee would have had to have been to defeat Barack Obama in 2008.

2012 stands to be even more difficult for any Republican nominee, especially when the incumbent Democratic President shows Reagan-like skills of convincing people.
