On February 1, 1999 (before the Senate voted on his impachmenet), President Clinton decides to resign. Al Gore becomes President. The Democrats easily nominate him in 2000. The GOP nominates McCain in 2000. Everything else stays the same. How would this election turn out? You pick the VPs. Discuss, with maps. Also, how would the 2004 election turn out in this scenario?

I don't think Americans will vote out an incumbent President with a good economy and a lack of foreign threats.

Being president for a couple of months after the top of your ticket had to resign due to scandal doesn't quite qualify as a true "incumbent President".

Pretty much my map.

I'd give Gore VT, CT, ME-1, and possibly PA.

I'd give McCain MN.

I'm not doubting that Gore would lose, I just don't understand what the hell is going on with Missouri, Arkansas, Connecticut, and Vermont.

How do you all think this scenario would end up if Bush Jr. was the GOP nominee instead of McCain?
