I would absolutely vote Polk as I consider him to be one of the country's top 4 or 5 presidents.

Polk's expansionism was exactly what was necessary at the time.

Henry. Clay, Henry. He was the front most anti-Jacksonian. I always thought he was an abolitionist, but I don't think he was. Oh well.

I do not know really, but I do know that Clay was a great member of congress and speaker of the house. In the 1950's a senate comitte chaired by JFK named Clay the greatest Senator in the country's history.

National expansion was the key choice that made America the world power. I wish we had annexed more lands.

British Columbia and Baja California would have been logical gains.
Henry Clay favored stopping the slave trade, and deporting them back to Africa. He wrote the lousy slavery expansion compromises.
Why was the South so fearful of the limiting of the expansion of slavery? I don't understand why the South seceded in the fear that DC and the territiories would be banned of slavery.

Good point - BC is nice territory and would connect with Alaska, and Baja would be great for beach houses.

Those were the two most likely to have been conquered.
I think if America annexs Canada, it will become stronger. Investment in Mexico might be smart, if we were to annex them. Annexing the two countries would give us a much stronger population to rival China, when their economy takes off. That is the challenge for 2050.

We can work on Cuba too, to make the Republicans happy, although state admission compromises are never good. We should focus on admitting any possible country above the third world line.

Polk was one of my favorite (OF FEW) Democrat presidents. President Polk really did help expand. But I think a President Clay would have my vote. Currently, my vote puts Clay in the lead. Besides, I always (UNLESS JEFFERY DAMHER IS THE GOP NOMINEE) vote Republican.

The man was nuts
First of all, it was 54-40 or fight, going a good bit up into BC.
Second of all, Polk never used the slogan.
Third of all, Polk's expansionism was exactly what we needed then. He added more to the US than any other president [(
OK, alaska under Johnson, but other than him . . .

The Mexican Cession and Oregon Territory together are bigger than the Lousiana Purchase.

Oh I see what you're saying - the Louisiana purchase doubled the nation at the time, whereas these two later aquisitions, though larger, were being added to a larger exsisting nation - therefore representing a smaller percentage gain.
A lot of all three territories is still pretty much empty even today.
