If your avatar is accurate, I can suggest some bars for you to head to tonight to celebrate your first legal drink.  Smiley

That would be nice. The only one I know of around here is Union Pub. Smiley

That's a bit overpriced for the experience you get, but it is the bar of choice of Capitol Hill staffers.  At least, it is on weekdays.  It has such an incredible shift in clientele from weeknights to weekends.

I've always liked Marshall's (right across the bridge from Georgetown)  Very classic "Bar" feel.  http://www.marshallsbarandgrill.com/

Also, Mr. Smith's in Georgetown has a nice old piano player:  http://mrsmiths.com/v1/index

Mikado, did you ever go to the Gibson?  What did you think of it?

(Tuck: it's a 1920s speakeasy-style cocktail bar on the corner of 14th & U St.  There's no sign outside; look for a highly nondescript door to the left of another bar that I vaguely remember was called Marvin's or something.  I thought the place was awesome.)

Cafe Nema on U St. near 17th is also good; lively jazz music and cosy atmosphere.

Yes, I did.  It's obviously a special-occasion kind of place, but it's fantastic.

Speaking of Marvin's, a friend of mine's dad took me there once (my friend and his dad were visiting for Obama's inauguration) and it's fantastic.  PS: if you're in that area and don't feel like shelling out a lot, there's always Barack Obama's favorite hot dog place: Ben's Chili Bowl.  The hot dogs are fantastic.  There's a hilarious sign that lists people that can eat at Ben's for free: Bill Cosby, Michelle Obama, and Sasha and Malia Obama, and underneath the sign, there's scrawled, "Barack paid!"

Yeah, Ben's is awesome too.  As is Amsterdam Falafel on 18th St. in Adams-Morgan.  Not quite the same character as Ben's of course, but damn good falafel all the same.

I've been there once (I was visiting a friend in Adams-Morgan, and she wanted to do a quick dinner nearby).  It was pretty good, but I didn't really get why it's as well-known as it is.

I'm sure it must have been weird for a Brit not being able to buy alcohol until now....Smiley

Ben's is incredibly, incredibly over-rated. I suppose it's fine if you're drunk and hungry, and it's a nice cultural landmark, but there are much better cheap food places (like Amsterdam Falafel). If you're feeling adventurous (and you like sushi/Asian food) there's a good sushi bar/regular alcohol bar called Sticky Rice on H Street.

I'm not much into drinking, but my roommate is 22 and he always buys alcohol so I've never really had any problems when it comes to that. I do have a negative opinion of the age 21 restrictions here.
