Never.

Why won't you ask on other hand if I robbed anyone?

Yeah, 4 times. Once with a gun but every other time there was a guy (or a couple of guys) with knives.

One time they tried to steal my National identity document probably because they were grabbing everything i had, but i asked them to give it back because it's a pain in the ass to get another one with all the bureaucracy and whatnot. And they did give it back to me Grin
Another time the guy actually returned like 5 pesos to me to use the subway to go to work (despite 5 pesos being more than 5 times the necessary amount to go into the subway) Tongue

So, they weren't really traumatic experiences for me, maybe i was lucky in that aspect.

Yes, but not like someone coming up to me. I've had my vehicle broken into twice over a span of 15 years.

My car was broken into once, and my house when I lived up in Silverlake decades ago, was broken into, and the TV and a metal box that had about $350 in coins stolen. I have never been robbed in person thank heavens.

One leaves one's wallet at the hotel, and just carries the minimum cash necessary to effect the transaction is the way someone I "know" really well handled the matter.  Tongue

Yes, when I was about 16. They put a knife to me and demanded my money. I said no, so they gave me a nice little slice into my side. So when they walked away, I went into the trunk of the car, and bashed the ones arm up pretty good.

Needless to say, there is still some latin "gang" who are mad at me.

Precisely.  And you only do the deed in short time rooms.  But also I don't drink, and I'm a wary guy.  The worst I've had is girls demanding more than was agreed on or reasonable, but no outright robbing.

I've had a couple of radar detectors stolen...couple of car stereos.  Had the attempted break in a month or so ago that I posted about here.  Got "mugged" by a couple of young brothers in a High School bathroom once.

Damn son.

I've worked security for four years, and have had to deal with various things, but never been robbed myself.

But Berkeley was never a safe area, and I once thought through how I felt the non-crack addled mind works, and made made sure to not make myself a target when I was walking/biking around town at 3-4am (hundreds of times coming back from the late shift).

*Never wore headphones late late at night, stayed alert, would visibly look around often when out of well-lit areas.   Sane muggers, the people who can do it multiple times without being caught, develop strategies of sneaking up on people, and if their target isn't stumbling drunk with their neon iphone earbuds on, it makes the decision calculus a bit diff.

My current neighborhood in NYC, despite being probably the poorest area in Lower Manhattan, feels far safer late at night than Berkeley ever did.

- Had my house broken into three times. In the course of those three times had PS2, XBOX 360, TV, DVD Player, computer, groceries, cd's, and stereo stolen
- Had two bikes stolen
- Got mugged by a homeless(or seemingly so) guy with a knife two years ago walking to a convenience store. Only had ten bucks to give him.
- Car was broken into, but I didn't have anything in there for them to take.

All this was in the last three or four years.

Well, having your bike stolen doesn't count.  I've lost more money replacing bike seats than I've spent on bikes.

Nothing excites oneself more in the wee hours of the morning than discovering you have to bike uphill a couple miles without a bike seat to get to class on time.

Why doesn't it? Neither time did I just have the seat stolen. The first time, someone broke into the garage, the second time the lock was cut with wirecutters. I don't see the difference between that and having your car or a tv stolen.

FYI to other posters, robbery includes force against you personally. If your house were broken into, that definately sucks, but it's not robbery. That would be burglary. Fortunately, I've only been a victim of the latter.

Well, yeah, about one decade ago, I traveled a lot alone by train, and paid attention to nothing.

First time, was sleeping in the big train station of Marseille, one of my bag was aside, hadn't thought to that, guys had just to pick it up and to go away, they did it. When I woke up, maybe one hour after having begun to sleep, I was like mad, and thought maybe I could put the hand on these guys/my bag, I wanted my bloody bag back, then I might have run all over the 1st district of Marseille looking for it, till 10 in the morning. I found back my empty wallet behind the station, they took the equivalent of about $100, the bag contained it and about 25 music CDs.

Sencond time, night following this, still this bloody station, I was waiting my train back to home, it was the beginning of evening, was sitting on the top of big stairs in the front of the station, surely in a not very strong mood, and then several guys arrived here or there, sitting around and blahblhalablh, and 1 of them speaks more closely to me, and suddenly I turn the head I see an other guy taking a bit of cash from my remaining bag, and hell, I tried to make him give back, but he was like 'what?? you accuse me to steal you??', one against all these guys, I didn't insist. About $40 went off.

A bunch of weeks later, I go to Lyon, I'm in the train, it's 4am, still alone, drunk guys in one part of the wagon, some kinda drunk guys and girls in the other part, me kinda in the middle, and comes a guy from an other wagon, 'nicely' asks whether he can sit, asks if I've something to smoke (it was the epoch on which I smoked a bit of marijuana), I shared some of my marijuana with him, and blhablhablha, and we speak, and 'what do you do in life?' he might have asked, I might have answered 'I'm high-schooler blhablhablha' or something, 'and you?', and him to answer 'oh me, I mug people...', hmm, I might have answered something like 'oh? ah? really? how so?', and well he explained me all his exploits, and I might have been like 'oh ok ok...' surely trying to make him question himself about it, but well, at one point he went on 'and I'll mug you', and puts a knife out, 'you'll give me your money', I was under marijuana, sitting next to the window, the guy sitting on the other seat, then blocking me, only a bunch of drunk guys/girls around, well, bloody hell, I hadn't a lot of money, I didn't want to give it, then I begun a stronger speech, trying to make him figuring out how not nice of him it was, 'I gave you marijuana, I spoke nicely with you and now you mug me? come on...' 'more of that you mug me?? the young guy without money?? hey, go steal a bourgeois who benefits of the capitalist system' or something like that...(i know it's not smart to say that, but, it was 10 years ago, under marijuana with drunk guys and a knife in front of you, you might be less smart, anyhow, afterward i didn't like having used this argument here, and it made me think on me...). So I spoke, I spoke, I spoke, I really didn't want to give my money, and step by step the train came closer to that station of Lyon, and while he seemed serious enough till now, suddenly, he left, a bunch of mins later, train arrived in station, I guess it might have played a role.

About 1 year later, 3 guys in the night of Toulouse tried too I think, seems they wanted me to enter in the phone cabin by pretending I had to figure myself that the phone card I just lent to them didn't work but well, better I've let them the card and didn't enter in the cabin.

Anyhow, in each of these cases, I was in a very 'light' mood, quite unconscious, afterward, I paid more attention to display some assurance when I was in possibly not safe circumstances.
