LBJ served in the naval reserve in the military in WWII, so he did serve in the military.

In that case, Cleveland.

Since it went unanswered.

Albert Sidney Johnston

What confederate general wanted to be President of CSA instead of having a military command?

cpeeks, you get so much wrong that is easily checked, one wonders if you are trying to troll.

While Albert Sydney Johnson was from Texas, at the time that the Civil War broke out he was commander of the Department of California, resigning his commission in the U.S. Army when he received word of the secession of Texas.  The story of Johnson's trek across the desert with the Los Angeles Mounted Rifles as they headed east to join the Confederate cause is an interesting tale worthy of being made into a movie, but for some reason never has been.  It fits so well into the Lost Cause mythology that Hollywood embraced for a time, but I can't see it being made into a movie today.

Technically Jefferson was Colonel of the Albermarle County Militia, though not during wartime.

Buchanan served as a private in the War of 1812.

6 in a row who didn't serve: Taft, Wilson, Harding, Coolidge, Hoover, FDR.

Question:  Which presidents had been Secretary of War?

Since we have moved on, the answer to my last question, was Robert Toombs.

Nice try. As TF said, he was commander of the dept of California.

Which brings on another question. There were three Civil War Generals that served under Albert Sidney Johnston in CA prior to the war, two were Union, one confederate, who were they?

My bad your right it was  California, but I thought he commanded two confederates, and one union general, and they would have been confederate:armistead, garnett, union: hancock.

What significant role did Armistead's uncle play in the War of 1812?
