Is it still the case that all rounds except for the last in Conservative Party leadership elections are for MPs only, or has that fix system been abolished?

While I would prefer a vote from the onset, the current system is fairer than a mathematical trade off.

I can understand why that might be a subjective preference, but I don't see how it's any more (or less) inherently fair.

I'm just watching the Sky hustings on Youtube (I missed it this morning). Diane Abbott and Ed Balls both should be in the shadow cabinet, definately.

David Miliband speaks like a prime minister, not that i'm a fan of image politicians, or else i'd have supported the LibDems in May.

It doesn't have Burnham in it so it's not quite complete:

http://www.votematch.org.uk/lab2010/index.php

I got...

1. Balls
2. Abbott
--big gap--
3. E. Miliband
4. D. Miliband

Anyways, Abbott seems to have decided that making people aware of this thing will make people more likely to vote for her; it's linked to in an email from her campaign.

"Education: Tuition Fees should be replaced with a Graduate Tax."

They should be replaced with higher top rates of income tax - just adding an extra bracket or two at the top without changing the structure down below. The poll asks me to replace a bad - not wholly thought-through - concept with another of the same sort. How should I vote?

Anyways, I skipped the question and got a Classic Leftie result.

Abbott 71
the other Ed 49
Balls 31
the other David 19

Which is not quite how I'd vote, which would probably be

Abbott
Balls
the other Ed
Burnham
the other David

It would be very interesting if Abbott beat out Miliband the younger.

The PLP has decided that it will keep Shadow Cabinet elections, though they will be every two years in future. More important, probably, is the fact that the Chief Whip will now be elected and will serve for the whole Parliament; something that will almost certainly result in a major power shift within the Party. The vote wasn't even close; Nick Brown is obviously good at his job.

There will be a vote on rubber-stamping the overall package next week.

No one knows because there has never been a leadership election under this system in which the result was not certain beforehand*. David Miliband is generally regarded as the favourite, but that's mostly a reflection of his high media profile and his support from the bulk of the Party establishment. If the first round is sufficiently fragmented (and neither I nor anyone else knows if it will be or not), then any of four candidates could win. Most likely is that the winner will be a son of Ralph, but alternate outcomes are still possible.

*And also the first election under this system (deputy elections included) in which union endorsements will not be included with ballot papers from affiliates. In the 2007 Deputy election, most affiliate votes were cast in line with endorsements.

Are you all sitting down? Yes? Good. Because Dennis Skinner has just endorsed David Miliband.
