I've noticed that President Obama has not had any (if I can recall correctly) Oval Office addresses in his almost two years as President.

I'm not entirely sure how sixteen months translates into almost two years...

Obama prefers to go out on the stump instead of making a single televised speech that will cause most people to flip to another channel.  The heyday of the Oval Office address for raw political purposes is over thanks to cable television and the internet, since a president can't count on a captive television audience anymore.

How many did Bush do? I know there was 9/11, and I'm sure he did one for Iraq(although I'm not positive, because he did the "24 hours to leave Iraq" thing from the podium). Did he do one for Katrina?

I think it should be reserved for special events, ie war, national tragedies or crisis, resignations, etc. We haven't really had that so far in Obama's administration.

I seem to recall Bush doing one for his immigration plan.

He hasn't really needed one.  And, it's closer to one year than two years.

Anyone else find Oval Office addresses pretentious and generally unnecessary?

Absolutely. In the days of three tv channels and no internet, I'm sure they were awe-inspiring affairs. OMG, it's the prez, on tv, wow.......  I fully support Obama, but I don't need to see him anymore than I already do.
