I received my dues card today, so as of now I am officially a member of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War.  Smiley

I'm not actually a son, but a 3rd great nephew.  My third great uncle was killed in action at Fair Oaks in 1862.  Sad

Supposedly. Their is one still living who refuses to make herself public. She was like 13 or 14 when she got married to him.

How old was the last widow, and who was she? (I know she was much younger than her husband, though.)

Interestingly, I knew several people who knew his sister, and most of my cousins' children knew someone who knew his sister.

The thought of some depression-era teenager marrying a ninety year old veteran just to collect his modest pension <vomits> I don't really think it's fair to call her a war widow.
At least Anna Nicole Smith got a huge fortune.

Two of my great grandfathers were  Civil War veterans, one on Sherman's march to the sea, and the other finally captured as a POW at the Battle of Petersburg (the latter apparently so bonded with the Yanks while in a prisoner of war camp, that shortly after the war he moved to Brooklyn Smiley). Yes, I am that old. Sad

Since when did you agree with the Federal Gov't on anything concerning the Civil War? Wink

Which one, P.G.T. Beauregard or Joseph E. Johnston? Wink There was a Confederate Army of the Potomac early in the war.

My great-great-great grandfather was killed at Gettysburg (for the Union).

I have some relatives that fought for the Confederacy too.

One of Meade's great grandsons dies in 2005; he lived within 10 miles of me.

One of McClellen's descendants was commissioner of the RCMP, and some still are with the Mounties.

I plan on joining the Sons of Confederate Veterans at some point.  One of my ancestors was General Ambrose Powell Hill and another was a Maryland planter who ran to VA to join the Confederacy.

Ah, AP Hill, you know how he died, no need to remind you. Wink What's interesting is that at one point in the war the 1st MD CSA and the 1st MD USA faced off.
