Derek, you're trolling.

I think it's very likely Obama runs an upbeat and positive ad in 2012, though that shouldn't be taken as a surprise. Bush was a rare incumbent who based his campaign around fear. Most of the time they run on optimism and success.

As far as the economy is concerned, the market struggling does not equal the economy struggling. The market failure in 2008 was caused by the collapse of the housing market and investment banks. It was those collapses that hurt average Americans, not the stock market so much. Same in 1929. The Stock Market Crash was not the cause of the Great Depression. Also, look at Bloody Munday. It had no impact on the economy, but the market plummeted. I think that the European Debt Crisis will have very little effect in the US economy overall.

If Obama wants the trust of the American people he has a long way to go.

Fear and loathing were Dubya's style. Maybe such was more the creation of Karl Rogue and Dick Cheney, but... a fish stinks from the head. Fear steadily breaks people down, and when fear becomes disgust, then those using fear must watch out.

Optimism woks, especially when it has good events underpinning it.

But it was a dangerous meltdown.  The  seventeen months of the 2007-2009 meltdown may not have been an exact parallel to the 1929-1933 meltdown, but it came close at afew points

If economic optimism is restored, then President Obama is a shoo-in.

Scare tactics work because they send a clearer message. While voters will respond that they like positive messages better, they will always get scared when faced with a 3am ad. I almost considered voting for Hillary for a minute to 2 because as far to the left as she is she will do what the polls say and strong defense is popular. When Bush showed the twin towers burning it reminded us all of what we're up against. Sometimes fear and the cold hard facts of life is what it takes to get through to an uninformed voter. Positive messages while cheezy only work for someone who is a positive and upbeat individual like Ronald Reagan or JFK.
