The election is a close one but Polk beats Taylor due to his successes while President. But Taylor gains ground due to his success as a General.

Polk was quite popular in 1848 IIRC, so I presume that he would have won re-election by a large margin. I'm not going to post a map, though, because I do not know what the scope of the victory would be.
