What's the big deal here? Some bitch complained about kids selling lemonade, the cops told them to stop, one of the cops (who is nonetheless apparently scum) did some research and found out the kids could sell lemonade, now they're allowed to sell lemonade again. The outrage?

I mean, it was ridiculously dumb that these kids initially got shut down.

Yes, I am outraged that we live in an expanding police state where even children selling lemonade on the sidewalk have been made targets of the boys in blue.

It's fine until the kids selling lemonade start organizing into unions.

You know, what's fun?  If we had a Republican President and Congress, the responses in this thread would be completely inverse--despite the fact that the direction of the federal government would have no effect on the actions of some sleazy local yokel smalltown cop in Haverford Township, PA.

Some of the responses would be inverse, yes. Why is that fun though?

Did you read the article? They were the target of a neighbor who called in the cops. The cops were just doing their jobs and (if you actually read the article) took the extra step of finding a way to get the kids back in business.

Just is.

And I think permits to start businesses are important.  At least fill out a form for tax purposes.

I don't know of any country where you start a business without having to tell your government about it.  Even in business freedom champion Hong Kong its still a one page same day application.

Now, for a lemonade stand, it's obviously silly.  But it would be equally silly to add the clause "exclude lemonade stands from this law in case some dumb woman across the street decides to be mean to the children" to the permit requirement.  This was a one time case.

LOL, you people will go to any length to defend the fuzz, won't you? It's cops' jobs to shut down lemonade stands now?

Oh, but thank you officer for trying to save your own ass after discovering you had already overstepped your boundaries and enforced a non-existent law against some 5-year-olds. What a tough guy.

Not what I said.  The officer thought people were required to have a permit to solicit door to door, which is normally true, except if you are a child.

It was a different officer.    This story, or really a non-story, is also a year old.

They were responding to a call.

If you heard screams next door, called the police and claimed somebody was being attacked, and they showed up at your neighbor's house only to find it was the kids playing inside, would the police be at fault for the intrusion?  Or should they have to wait until you were able to prove them in the phone call without the shadow of a doubt that there was an attack?

There's more important police corruption scandals than Barney Fife and his lemonade iron fist in Havertown.

Then the people who reported this heinous non-crime of selling lemonade should be charged for a clear false alarm.

Let's not confuse regulations on businesses that exploit the general public, with shutting down kids' lemonade stands.

It's rooted in the same principle though. How do you know the kids making lemonade ensured their product was inspected to conform to government regulations before being marketed?

The cop should have arrested the complaintant.

If I were the 911 call take I would have said:

Agreed.  I think cops and dispatchers should show a little more discretion.  I don't think their superiors would be too pissed if they didn't go bust a lemonade stand.  If that's all they have to do on a given day, then maybe there should be fewer cops in this town.  Figures though, scared white people have way too many cops and then piss and moan when they do stupid shist like this, but it's their fault for hiring one cop for every minority they see.

Who says these kids weren't exploiting people?  Look, the only reason the lemonade stand was set up was for one reason: profit.  Greedy kids, attempting to bypass government regulations so that they wouldn't get in trouble when one of their unknowing customers ingested urine instead of lemonade.  All so they could go out and buy some Beanie Babies or some troll dolls or whatever nonsense they buy these days.  Bastards.
