I've been considering a move to suburban Toronto for a few years now.  There are many arguments for an against the move.

For:

-Politics (Left of the US)
-Pot (Decriminalized)
-Money (I would be very well-to-do in Canada with the conversion rate and all)
-Friends (draft dodgers my dad knew still live up there to this day)

against:

-Taxes (higher % taxes)
-Friends (most of my friends remain here in greater NYC)
-I have lived in NY all my life

----

What should I do?

No, you shouldn't.  Instead, you should "Take your country back" as Howard Dean would say.

Instead, I think conservatives should be shipped there or to Scandinavia to see that they live with all these things they think will cause the downfall of humanity without the world collapsing.  Maybe then if they come back they would be less quick to demonize liberals in the United States and see that in the world spectrum we are just moderates.

As a Canadian I should be completely unbiased (Ya, and Public Healthcare was introduced by the Republicans yesterday).

Firstly what's wrong with Left politics? Welcome to the rest of the world, a lot of countries, I mean most of them, have a more left sided view of things than the U.S. You'd likely be a Liberal or a Conservative up here.

I live currently in Suburban Toronto aka the 905 (due to our area code), specifically Brampton, about 20 km west of the big city.

There are other benefits to living in Canada, public healthcare, public education, low crime, clean, no threats of terrorism (at least not in a long time), multiculturalism, and in general a friendly view on Americans. Oh, and most of our TV is straight from America so you won't miss any of your favourite news, sitcom, or reality programs. Also the weather isn't as bad as people make it out to be, Ontario is compariable to New York, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, places like that.

If you do decide to move here, I advise Mississauga. It is the 6th largest city in Canada and one of the fastest growing making a lot of opprotunities.

I'll think of other reasons why Canada are awesome soon enough, I've only just begun.

About 7.5 SEK. But since you don't know what anything costs here it doesn't tell you anything, now does it? Smiley

As a fellow Dean supporter (I still went and voted for him in the end), I can safely say that I don't think Howard would want all of his supporters to move out of the country. The more people to echo what Dean had to say, the better chance for his ideas to be implemented.

What should I do?

I certainly wouldn't move there because of the politics.  If you have another valid reason to live there, like a good job opportunity, then it may be worth considering.

I don't think your dad's friends are a good reason to move there.  Parents' friends are not a good substitute for your own friends.

The cost of living there from what I hear is high, which could negate the financial benefits that you think you're going to get.  If you really want to be well-to-do, you could take your money and move to a nice part of the south, or in a more extreme case, to Mexico or someplace like that.

One thing against Toronto would be the weather.  It is much colder than the NY metro area.  The NY weather that is comparable is Rochester or Buffalo, and I've been there in the winter.  It would take a lot of getting used to.

I hear Toronto's a great city, but I would only move there for a great job opportunity.

You should move to Finland before Sweden.

We'll offer:

Lower taxes than Sweden
Most high-quality healthcare
Politics left of the USA, but not socialist one like in Sweden.
VERY beautiful nature, healthy food.
Low crime rate
Most people speak good English
Good golf fields

I can't understand how Scandanavians understand American politics. Based on BBC radio, which I am forced to listen to occasionally, I do not know a thing about political parties, and how the elections work abroad.

I think that Finland is before Sweden in high tech. The world's biggest mobile phone supplier Nokia is from Finland. Sweden has only poor Ericsson.

You're crossing the line here... Smiley

Ericsson is returning now...and Nokia is all you have, whereas Sweden has a lot of other high tech industries as well. And Ericsson still dominates their ral business: mobile systems.

Zachman: I get it from multilpe sources, remember that I can watch CNN and Fox News here in Sweden. And the Swedish media is following the election, an not in the biased way they used to...and I also get a lot of info from you guys... Wink
