(Part of a series of re-examining how historical landslides would turn out in today's very different and far more polarized United States)

Imagine if the 1972 election, Richard Nixon vs. George McGovern, were held in today's United States...what would the electoral map look like?

(Also feel free to include a "swing" map from what the original election outcome was, if you like making maps Tongue)

McGovern doesn't reach 25%. Same comment as for 1964 and 1984.

Not much could've been done for McGovern. Play all the water gate clips you want and people would know better.

Here's how I would predict the swing would be in the state margins if we transposed the 1972 election to the present-day:

McGovern would win on the grounds of Nixon being a seasoned insider. It's that kind of climate. Plus, Nixon was always an asshole, so it works out.
