I vote "yes" as I am not totally fond of Mr. Leip's dictatorship.

I suppose we could also try to elect them by the electoral college, which would be really interesting!

We don't even elect our presidents by popular vote. Why our mods? An electoral college mod system would be interesting. Wink

No. We'd probably end up with Libertas or someone as a mod after Hamilton's socks and his troll buddies stuffed the vote. Please see Atlasia.

And yet they always end up with horrible approval ratings on this board. I remain unconvinced that this would be a major problem.

Correct.

Hm, dude, whenever you like it or not, Dave is an owner of the site and he makes the rules. We're guests here.

How long before Eraserhead turn into another Teddy comparing moderators and owner actions to Nazi Germany? Take your guesses.

Who's Teddy?

A mentally-ill poster who left back in January claiming that the site resembled Nazi Germany.  I'd rather not bring that incident back up.

I had an idea for a website, where the admin is elected every so often, and the site members elect a legislature that votes on things like banning members or creating new boards.  Of course, there would have to be some other draw to the forum besides that.  In a larger board, the admin would nominate moderators to be approved by the legislature.

Well, I'm totally opposed to this. For one thing, if we had "Moderator elections" then the whole Forum would become consumed with that, and care about nothing else. The point of this site is to discuss politics, not fight about who's going to moderate it. Wink

The potential problem with this is that someone like BRTD will probably get elected, who would invariably abuse the system to ban people he disliked.

For the record, Moderators can't ban or even put people on mod review.  The worst a renegade mod could do would be to randomly delete threads.

Moderators can, however, unfairly target one person and try to distort the reality of what's going on with excessive lobbying of Dave Leip, all in the hopes of getting their target banned.

I know of at least one individual who does that now...

People just don't get banned on a whim here.  You might notice that you're still here.
