As long as it doesn't require any money to see FiveThirtyEight, I've not a got problem with this.

Well, at least we can fully discredit them now.

Nate Silver/538 is probably more reliable than most the pollsters out there. Being affiliated with the NYT means absolutely nothing and it's nonsense to pretend it discredits them in some way.

538 lost creditability in my eyes.

538 never had that much credibility with me.

There are a lot of things that math can be applied to.  I really don't think the logic of the American voter is one of those things.

They did really, incredibly well at prediciting the '08 election, and the primaries, take that as you will. *shrug*

Of course conservatives don't find any credibility in 538.com or Nate Silver.  After all, facts do have a liberal bias.  Smiley

I suppose they can take comfort from the fact that they crashed and burned wrt the General Election here. Or maybe not.

Who didn't crash and burn with your general election?  There are so many more variables to take into consideration, everybody outside the UK (and most people within it) were simply baffled.

I was thinking he was more off in the 2008 elections.  I may have misjudged...

A bunch of Americans specializing in electoral politics screwed up predicting a British election?  Sounds expected.

With the exception of NE-2 (which pretty much everybody got wrong), 538.com was dead on.

Wikipedia said he got Indiana wrong too... why'd they say that?

I can't remember, but maybe his official prediction showed a very narrow loss?

If anyone can remember, Silver pretty much only blew onto the national scene because of his amazing predictions of Indiana in the primary, which were based off of demographics rather than polling.

He had it in the 'lean GOP' column for at least a week before the election, and then moved it to a toss-up on election day as the exit polls came in.

Who needs 538 when there's at least a few posters on this forum who do a better job on almost everything?

The triumph of 538 is pretty much the triumph of just averaging shit together. Which is not to detract from the value of just averaging shit together.

Every once in a while, complexity sneaks in, but it often feels like complexity for the sake of complexity.

I'm too lazy to read the article.  How much did NYT buy it out for?

Doesn't say.  In reality, they're more closely "renting" Silver's blog, paying him a salary to blog on their site and giving him 100% creative control.

So, Nate Silver was hired by the New York Times.
