This year is the first where I can legally vote, and I'm debating whether or not I should.  I'm considering the faint possibility of voting in the Republican primary, but the only candidate I somewhat mildly like is Chuck DeVore (I hate all the other candidates).  In the general election I will be voting for Chelene Nightingale for governor, assuming she wins the AIP primary, and either voting for Gail Lightfoot for Senate or just writing-in myself.

Do they even have write-in votes in California?

Anyways, there are some cons to voting.  Jury duty for one thing, and also, if I move to Washington to go to UW, I have to register to vote there within thirty or ninety days (I can't remember) if I'm registered to vote here.  But that's no problem, really.  Jury duty, I could get out of by saying I'm a student, or just bullsh**tting my way out of it.

Besides, I'd feel bad about being a non-voter, since I lament about the sheer number of non-voters in this country.  I do not want to descend into the kind of voter apathy that is ruining this country.  Even if it means writing in myself or Ron Paul for all the positions with candidates I don't like.

The primary in California is on the eighth, by the way.

Primary voting is really something you should only do if you feel really strongly about some of the races and have a lot of background info on them, in my opinion.

There's no excuse for skipping a general, though.

nah you probably shouldn't vote unless it is like a presidential election, or like town council.

Voting should be done with the understanding that it only exists to make you feel like your voice is being heard in the government. Voting doesn't actually have any real effect.

You should vote, always.
It's a key element of our democracy.
Remember 1876, 2000, 1960, 2008 Washington, 2008 primaries, 2008 Minnesota?

lol. Just because the elections were close doesn't always mean there was low turnout.

Don't bother unless it's for something or someone you really believe in.  Voting for the sake of voting is a greater disservice to our nation than not voting.

Voting against the top-two nonsense is reason enough to show up.

Oh yeah, don't you have a marijuana legalization referendum on the ballot in Cali? That might be a good reason to vote.

That's in November I think. There is Proposition 16, though, which would make it harder for municipalities to get into the electric power business.

What is the election day for the propositions?

...Same as the primary stuff. That's why I brought it up.

Registering you to vote will only make you have jury duty if you don't have a drivers license.

To be honest, I doubt that municipalized electricity is much of a threat. San Francisco soundly rejected a proposition to explore that idea in 2008 & we have had municipalized water for decades.

Santa Clara (which you may know as the place the 49ers may well move) has provided electricity for a few years now, and it's popular. At any case, PG&e SHOULDN'T BE ABLE TO GET AWAY WITH THIS.

Well yes. I do not want a monopoly by anyone, whether it be PG&E or the City of San Francisco. Granted monopolies are generally allowed in the area of utilities anyway, but if a municipality decides they want competition, more power to them. For that matter, if they decide to burn all their money running PG&E out of town, that's their prerogative.
