Senator George McGovern makes an announcement in Mitchell, South Dakota:

"For too long we have heard silence from our leaders as innocent lives, American and Vietnamese, continue to perish in a senseless war in southeast Asia. It is time for a change. I feel a moral obligation to thus announce my candidacy for Presidency of the United States in 1972."

Senator McGovern heads to Gary, Indiana to hold a rally with local black leaders, promising that he is the right candidate to move race relations forward. He cites George Wallace's support for segregation and Henry Jackson's opposition to busing as evidence that his primary opponents are out-of-touch with the needs of black Americans and with the Democratic Party in the post-Civil Rights era.

The McGovern campaign releases a statement pointing out that, unlike racist challengers George Wallace and 'Scoop' Jackson, George McGovern does in fact support a sensible busing program to promote racial integration.
