Study: Teens not the worst text-driving culprits

What? Clearly the government must implement more burdensome restrictions on young drivers. That'll stop the problems of text-driving and phone-driving for sure, just like raising the drinking age stopped drunk driving.

Why not just ban the use of mobile phones while driving entirely?

Talking on a phone while driving isn't much different from talking to a passenger in it. Texting of course is different. Ban texting while driving for everyone and have phones allowed otherwise unless you have some sort of restricted license (like if you got a DUI or something.)

Although operating a non-automatic car with a phone in your hands isn't very easy...

And in fast food America.. it's not easy to eat either.

But who, in America, drives a manual?  We leave such rudimentary things to the rest of the world. (As someone who drives on snowy, icy roads for much of the year, automatic is *greatly* preferred.)

Some states do that; 27 states have bans specific to young drivers.

But this was a survey of only people who text.  I wonder who accounts for more texting while driving - teens overall or adults overall (I'm honestly clueless about the percentage of adults who text).

Personally, I'm all for texting bans.  I know people make the argument that "we already have bans against reckless driving" or "they'll get a ticket when they cause an accident," but I find those argument somewhat stupid, and here's why: the most common thing that driving texters do that is dangerous is go outside of their lane.  If cops started pulling people over every time they weaved in and out of their lane, you'd hear a lot of complaints from drivers (many of whom complained about the texting thing).  And at the point that you've caused an accident, it's a little late to give somebody a ticket for something that could've been prevented.  When you drive, you give up certain privileges, and one of those things should be dangerous distraction (something that takes both hands off the wheel - like texting).

Talking on the phone is different, because you can still fully function the car.  Texting, you can't.

Minnesota doesn't ban all drivers from using cell phones, just minors.

The Georgia Law was just passed this session, for the record. In it, no age can text while drive, and no one under 18 can use a cell phone at all. Adults can still talk on theirs.

To give an example of how stupid Perdue is, he considered vetoing the bill, saying he doesn't like banning texting for adults! WTF?!

Only adults can make sensible decisions duh.

Experienced drivers never get in accidents.

I was just about to say... texting might even be more dangerous if legalized for adults, because a lot of adults have an "I can handle it.  I'm experienced." attitude, whereas some (smarter) kids will say, "I'm not experienced.  I'm not going to do it."

But of course. Olds vote and AARP is one of the most powerful lobbyists in the country. Youngs either can't vote at all or are simply marginalized.

Haha, he deserves to be run over by some pickup truck driver who is texting.

Bans on this sort of thing won't be very effective.

They will be very effective at making the roads more dangerous and increasing government revenue.

Increasing government revenue.....alright, no contest there.......but how on Earth does a ban on texting make roads more dangerous?

People will keep texting and talking, they'll just work harder to hide it, often taking their eyes completely off the road. And if they see a cop, expect them to speed and engage in some reckless driving to avoid being in their line of sight. I've seen this happen. NY was I think the first state to enact a ban on cell phone use while driving back in 2001.

I wholeheartedly agree that this would be a great idea. If an adult wants to text or call someone, then how about they park their car somewhere and then do it? It would be much safer that way.

Did you know, that, until this year, it was legal to drive a truck and not wear your seatbelt in Georgia? Also, even after they changed it, you can still not wear it if you're in a pickup ruck and doing business related to farming. Grrrr.....

The Federal and State DOT both estimate that the law will save 27 lives a year, and prevent over 300 accidents a year.
