My favorite senator bar none within my lifetime, along with Alan Simpson.

A cowardly man too fearful of ever standing up to the establishment.

Lean FF compared to Clinton, Schumer, Gillibrand, but still...

A little too right-wing , especially in the early days, but decent for the most part.

Moynihan did have some ideological connections to the neocon movement. Early on he was associated with people like Irving Kristol, Jeane Kirkpatrick, and Norman Podhoretz, after all.

Unusual in several respects. Firstly, because there aren't many US Senators who still get cited (though rarely entirely approvingly) in academic journals. Second, because remarkably few US Senators have come from working class backgrounds.

To call him a neocon would still be inaccurate (as is the case with most people who are called "neocons" on here).

Well considering DPM a neocon is not something that was made up on here. Do a google search for "moynihan neoconservative", for example.

Granted, he is even so quite the "mild" one compared to how extreme the neocons became under Bush-Cheney.

Moynihan wasn't a neocon. He was far too ideologically idiosyncratic for that.
