We all know of George Wallace's plans to throw the 1968 election to the House by winning state through his "American Independence Party". Of course, Nixon won the election outright, and the AIP collapsed as a national party.

Well, what if the election had gone to the House? Would the AIP have been established as a party? I mean, by electing Representatives and Senators. Would a real three party system emerge, or would the AIP still be a blip in history?

It would have still been a blip in history, as many Republicans would be pressuring Wallace and other Souterners to avoid making any third party runs in the future as to prevent the GOP from losing some more elections where they should have won.

If you want to discuss the merits (or lack thereof) of having more than two parties in general do so in the Individual Politics or the Political Debate board.

When has George Wallace ever listened to anybody?
