In 1956, Eisenhower struggled whether to keep Nixon on the ticket, but decided, due to Nixon's very convincing arguments, to keep him.

Say Nixon was not so convincing, and Eisenhower does as FDR did in 1940, drops his VP and picks his Secretary of Agriculture, Ezra Taft Benson of Utah for VP.

(Of course FDR dropped Garner because he had had him for two terms, whereas in this scenario Ike drops Nixon due to allegations of Nixon's impropriety)

Does Ike dropping Nixon and picking Benson have any effect on the 1956 election?

Please discuss.

Technically I don't think Garner was "dumped". Garner run for President in first place and I'm sure he wouldn't even accept to be V.P. nominee again due to his opposition to FDR third term.

Are you merely trying to find a figure in the administration whose VP candidacy could have cost Ike the election? No way is a Mormon Bircher the vp nominee in 1956.
