Looks like Cullen is going to lose in Bay Ward Sad. I guess this frees him to run for the NDP in the provincial election (luckily Kilrea is doing sh*tty).  Cullen's wife is doing well in her school board race however.

Watson is declared the winner.

Ottawa, 46.9%

Watson 48.7
Larry 24.1
Doucet 14.3
Haydon 7.5
Maguire 2.5

As for my school board race, it's still close but the mother of the girl who was in my class is ahead. And my incumbent councillor is coasting

Ward 11 (Beacon Hill-Cyrville) is shaping up to be a close one. Bellemarre leads 49.5-47.1. This should have been on the radars, given that Tierney (a right-winger) had a sh**tload of yard signs in Beacon Hill, which is unusual for a municipal election. Hopefully he loses, since iirc he's linked to far-right nut Terry Kilrea.

Close race in Kanata North between incumbent Marianne Wilkinson and Jeff Seeton.
Mark Taylor has a sizable lead over incumbent Alex Cullen in Bay
Keith Egli is winning the open seat in Knoxdale-Merivale
Tight race between Michel Bellemare and Tim Tierney in Beacon Hill-Cyrville
Maurice Lamirance winning in the open seat of Rideau-Rockcliffe against a couple of former politicians
Incumbent Christine Leadman losing in Kitchissippi
David Chernushenko is going to win in Capital. I hate the Greens, but this is pretty cool.
Incumbent Rob Jellet is losing in Cumberland
Long time incumbent Glenn Brooks is getting destroyed in his ward
Allan Hubley is winning in the open seat of Kanata South against the heir to the Alex Munter throne Sad

The Nazi has dropped below 50% in Toronto, which means that perhaps only a minority of Toronto voters should go live in Germany-1933.

Quick scan of Toronto council races:

- a Ford type picks up a seat from a sane person in north Etobicoke
- Doug Ford, unsurprisingly, hold's his brother's seat, also in north Etobicoke
- moderate NDP'er Maria Augimeri is narrowly losing to a right-winger in North York
- Peruzza wins the perennial Peruzza vs Li Preti match
- vaguely progressive challenger defeats centre-right incumbent in High Park
- in Davenport, an NDP seat falls to Mario Silva's aide
- Mike Layton easily elected to Pantalone's old seat (that Sean McCormick guy in third)
- NDP candidate very narrowly leading the downtown ward Smitherman's aide was expected to pick up
- centre-left both picks up a seat and loses an incumbent in the east end (of the old city, not Scarborough)
- a couple of Scarborough wards shift to the right
- Ward 10 is total chaos, I know nothing about the guy who's currently in first with 17%

so all in all, not a huge new wave of conservative councillors

Somebody should really do a ward map of Toronto (and Ottawa) based on the new councillor's affiliation and/or political leanings.

Will try one.

Trustees are easier, believe it or not, since I have a list of endorsements by the left wing Our Ottawa group.

Blackburn, Kavanagh, Fitgerald, Funiciello, Campbell, and McKenzie are the progressive Trustees leading. 6/12... pretty close.

Believe it or not, that is probably a better reason than most people have when they vote for trustee.

Also, right-wing councillor Etobicoke Peter Milczyn is losing to a guy who seems neither obviously right-wing nor obviously left wing, which is a bit surprising. This is the northern half of Etobicoke-Lakeshore, the poshest part of Etobicoke.

I am really confused. Are there really that many right wing Liberals in Toronto?

Really close race in London

DeCicco-Best is leading right wing Liberal former MP Joe Fontana by 200 votes with about 45% of the polls in.

Brantina still leads in Hamilton

Hazel McCallion re-elected but with only 76%. Susan Fennell is re-elected for mayor of Brampton.

Actually upon further investigation the new councillor for High Park is affiliated with Cheri DiNovo, so that may be an actual NDP gain.

The thing is, in big cities where there are a lot of poor minorities and a lot of middle-class suburbanites are a couple of generations removed from non-British working-class immigrants, you get a lot of people who aren't conservative at higher levels of government since they value public education and health care, but who resent all their property taxes going to city hall since they mostly get around by car rather than transit, don't use other municipal social services either, and like the police a lot. Think of all the people in New York who voted Democrat/Giuliani, or similarly the fact that Mike Quigley who now has Rahm Emanuel's congressional seat was mainly known for opposing property tax hikes as a municipal politician in Chicago but is now a standard liberal in Washington.

Even Barbara Mikulski started out life as the candidate of the pissed off lower-middle class - look at the quote of hers on Wikipedia.

And there you have it. The most conservative city in Canada votes for a liberal Muslim last week and the multicultural bastion of Toronto votes for a racist white conservative. (who by the way, won by getting a lot of immigrant support, if the last EKOS poll is to be believed)

I attempted to do Ottawa, but for some of the new councillors, it's difficult to figure out what party they support if any. And of course, it means nothing anyways. You have Eli El-Chantiry, Rich Chiarelli and Bob Monette who are Liberals, but are on the right wing (El Chantiry is the most right wing councillor), while you have someone like Peter Hume who is a Red Tory who is a centrist on the council, and has quite a few left wing positions.

I do know that this council will be to the right of the previous council. We saw 2 retiring NDP councillors replaced by a green and an unknown (who defeated an NDPer), one lose (Cullen) to a Liberal, and one remain.
