Martin Luther King Jr. survives his 1968 assassination attempt and runs for President against Richard Nixon in 1972. He runs as an anti-war, anti-poverty, anti-racism candidate. Who would win? Discuss with maps.

Off the top of my head I'm not sure MLK wins anything besides D.C.

He would've lost badly, but have been very admirable. The problem is that he'd have to beat Nixon in the primaries because he was a Republican.

Nixon would win in a massive landslide.

His father was yes, but I'm not sure of MLK's party registration.

Didn't MLK support JFK in 1960?

I'm not sure what you're getting at by supporting JFK. Are you trying to change history?

King's father was going to vote for Nixon until JFK visited MLK in jail during the campaign. He apparently changed his mind and supported Kennedy afterwards. I don't know if MLK cared that much for party labels.

Whoops, according to Wikipedia it was actually Bobby who " telephoned the judge and helped secure King's release". Of course, this could all be fabrication. It's Wikipedia.

Bobby worked for JFK, though.

Well of course. But that section didn't have any citations and such.

He would've made a good candidate in the 80's but I highly doubt he would have liked to see how dependent the black community has become on welfare and handouts. It's almost like their community has become completely dependent on the government. What about independence which is what King really wanted.

A black civil rights leader who's an open socialist? With all the wiretapping and files on MLK from the FBI at his disposal, Nixon would have had a field day tearing him down.

If MLK isn't shot sometime during the campaign, then he gets D.C. and that's it, but with a 90%-9% margin, as was in '04 and '08

You know that not all Republicans always support the Republican nominee for President. Likewise for the Democrats. Zell Miller was a Democrat, but he supported Bush in 2004.

I would vote for MLK, but America would not elect a black president only 8 years after the Civil Rights Act.

MLK would've been a candidate I would support. However, he probably would've been crushed.

Just wanted to note that MLK supported Johnson in 1964, to add to the "MLK the Republican" thing.
Also, I doubt he'd do well.
