interesting map this is going to make and lots of questions in the future about why this all occured.

first of all, Kerry picked up a county in Wyoming: http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2004/pages/results/states/WY/P/00/index.html

and that county in Idaho that was the only one Gore carried that many were expecting Kerry to lose was not only won but him, but with 59%! http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2004/pages/results/states/ID/P/00/index.html

I was disappointed by the Virginia results, but Kerry did pick up Fairfax as I expected:
http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2004/pages/results/states/VA/P/00/index.html

meanwhile Apache county, a predominantely Native American county in Arizona which voted heavily for Gore, swung to Bush: http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2004/pages/results/states/AZ/P/00/index.html

any theories on these and any more interesting swings?

possibly, but these are interesting swings. It'll be interesting to see the final results.

If true though, it appears that NickG was right, Shannon, SD looks like Kerry's best county, coming in at 85%, beating Macon (83%) and the Bronx (82%). Of course DC is still at #1.

Monmouth and Ocean counties in New Jersey went pretty heavily for Bush...must be the 9/11 factor.  Bergen County was also very close.

LaSalle County in Illinois swung back to Bush.

Kerry picked up a few rural counties in western Minnesota.

Macomb County, MI went to Bush narrowly and Bush also swept most of the northern lower peninusla.

I think Kerry picked up several more counties in Colorado ski country.

Bush won Pinellas, Orange, Hernando, Pacso, Osceola, etc. in in Florida and almost won Volusia.

Bush's several trips to western Wisconsin failed to do much in LaCrosse, Eau Claire, Grant County.  Wisonsin looks the same as 2000.

Democrats picked up one additional county in Montana, Missoula.
In Hawai'i, most of the swing occurred on Oahu, with Honolulu County going Dem by less than 2 percentage points, while the outer islands remained totally solid Dem.
