I'm not sure if this tells us much that we couldn't work out already. At least in general terms.

That is a bizarre statement!

The documents prove that Americans and their "partners", including Britons, have never been at greater risk from within Afghanistan thanks to the back-of-a-cigarette-packet planning clearly in place before the invasion. As for "threatening security", I have been in an airport during an ETA bomb attack, and have lived in the UK during the IRA bombing campaign; I hold little credence to the idea that maintaining a "conflict" in one part of the world stops attacks elsewhere.

Might want to check on the "sources" briefing in the newspapers today from both sides who now distruct each other far more than they already did. Pakistan's role in this conflict needs scrutiny, not bypassing.

Yeah, they're doing an FAN-TAST-IC job of that, so far. Driving Taliban into lawless provinces of Pakistan, well done, there.

Really?  What does this mean?

"The documents posted by Wikileaks reportedly cover a period of time from January 2004 to December 2009. On December 1, 2009, President Obama announced a new strategy with a substantial increase in resources for Afghanistan, and increased focus on al Qaeda and Taliban safe-havens in Pakistan, precisely because of the grave situation that had developed over several years."

Sorry dude, killing troop morale is not a good thing. I am all for open government but in one sense I agree that the military does need to keep certain things secret, not forever, mind you but for a period of time. We would have never won World War Two with our current media. The person who leaked this committed a crime and should be treated in the proper way a traitor should be treated.

But we should not want the US to 'win wars', States.  A 'treasonous' american in the current context is as heroic as a German who tried to sabotage the Holocaust.  Would you call Schindler a traitor?

Again, blame Bush and contradict his own National Security Advisor:

"On Monday, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs dismissed the reports, saying they represent a disjointed series of snapshots of the war effort from 2004 to 2009 — before Obama announced his new strategy that relies on increased deployments and an attempt to stand up Afghan civilian and military authorities."

It would be a good idea to end the war now and embrace Philip Assaunge.  He'd make a good replacement for Hillary.

As much as I would love to see the fits that would give the right-wing militarists, it would probably be better if he were kept as far away from the United States government & its various arms as possible.

Isn't it convenient how the leaks end right when Obama changes the strategy? Weird. Obama would have a point that we should blame this solely on Bush if he could show any results after the strategy change. As far as we know, the same things are going on in the region. The ISI is plotting with Al Qaeda to kill American soldiers while we sit around hoping and wishing the Pakistanis would help us. Can someone explain to me why we give aid to Pakistan instead of bombing them?

We're actually doing both of course.

Attacking a country with jet fighters and nuclear-tipped MRBMs is a swift way to get casualties that make Afghanistan look small.

We should start bombing a few madrasas in Peshawar and Quetta.

Besides, that the ISI are the Taliban's sugar daddy is hardly news, is it? It isn't as though they've ever really bothered to keep their relationship secret.

Yes, fighting wars is the constitutionally authorized job of the federal govt.

Provided that they are declared by Congress, which has not been done since 1941.

The documents aren't that important at all, but mostly ground-level intelligence collections.

Nonetheless, the action was clearly illegal and principally can't be tolerated.  Those involved should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, and if the law doesn't go far enough, it's time to renew the wartime sedition law.

I'm assuming you mean the 1918 Act.  if so, how are we to define "at war?"  unlike WWI, Congress has not declared war, and if we are in fact "at war" right now we can assume the state of war to be perpetual and without end.

Wartime sedition laws always worked out really well and were totally never abused. Great idea.

I'm willing to bet it won't be hard to find people in government that will find reasons it absolutely "needs" to be extended beyond that point, Jokerman.

Funny how People like States that cry big government when it wants to pay for health insurance.....but have no problem with government operating wars in absolute secrecy.

Seems to me different people just have different things they like the Government to do...nothing else.

Some people are consistently against big government in all things. Wink

The troops are guarding the poppy fields in Afghanistan.  The heroin then ends up on the streets of the US, Canada and western Europe.  The corrupt puppet president's brother is one of the heroin lords over there.

^^^^^^^^^^^ Is a conspiracy theory. Why would the US government do cover up anything of the sort? They have the power to regulate and legalize any drug they wish. Why would they go to such a strong effort to fuel a conspiracy theory when they could simply legalize heroin and regulate it when they have no one to stop them. Seriously, that's why Alex Jones is just a showman, he knows that as well as most anyone with half a brain in their head.

Why would they want to legalize it when keeping it illegal increases its price tenfold on the black market? Anyway, you might want to watch this.
