44% for Bush with 100% Precients Reporting...Do you think any 9/11 families live in Conneticutt or was it just luck? He only got 35% or so the last time.

It says 96% for me.

I hope Dave updates the site soon -- haven't Wisconsin, Iowa, New Mexico, and New Hampshire all been called?

44% for Bush with 100% Precients Reporting...Do you think any 9/11 families live in Conneticutt or was it just luck? He only got 35% or so the last time.

I think it was between the obvious and the subtle.

The obvious:
9/11 and the GOP convention in New York.

The subtle:
Clinton/Gore's unique brand of centrism appealed better to suburbs in general than Kerry. Of course, this doesn't explain why he picked up Fairfax VA.

Bush did better this year in NY, PA, NJ, RI, and MA as well.  Part of it is attributable to the natural edge an incumbent enjoys, and part to Nader's poorer showing.

Fairfax is simple: the trend there is just too strong to overcome.

Did Bush pick up any counties in Connecticut (Fairfield and/or Litchfield maybe)?
I'm only seeing township results for New England everywhere...I'm not a paying Atlas member...

I've done the maths myself now...
Bush did nick Litchfield County, by ~5500 votes.
Fairfield stayed Democratic, by ~14,000 votes.
All the other counties stayed Democratic too, Windham being also semi-close.

Going back a long way, Connecticut has consistently been several points more Republican in presidential elections than New York, Massachusetts or Rhode Island.  Fairfield and Litchfield Counties are the most Republican counties in the state.

As Bush did better in New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts than he did in 2000, the same was true of Connecticut.  It could partly be the effect of 9/11, or maybe just that unlike last time, he is an incumbent and a known quanitity, as opposed to somebody challenging a member of a fairly well-liked administration.

All in all, the Connecticut results are about the same in relation to surrounding states.  Kerry performed several points lower than in New York (54% vs. 58%), just as in 2000 with Gore (56% vs. 60%).

It's a fairly predictable result.

44% not really "so well" for a hometown boy, IMHO.
