How Did Paladino Win Western New York So Convincingly

I mean, yes, he's from Buffalo, but Cuomo won big everywhere else in the state , the only blue parts of the Atlas map are a few scattered counties in the east and of course, the Buffalo area.
To be honest, I found it suspicious that Paladino won Erie county by 21 points. Usually, D candidates don't lose Erie County unless they are losing fairly big across upstate.

Paladino is somewhat of a legend in Buffalo - unless you live there, you don't really know it. Also, Paladino is basically the only employer in Buffalo nowadays as well.

There's no conspiracy here. As Sam said, Paladino is very well known and popular in the Buffalo area. He's basically their Donald Trump, without Trump's negatives. He is best known in the Buffalo area for getting the tolls removed from the New York State Thruway in portions of Erie County - which, as you can imagine, was very popular there.
Contrary to Sam's tongue-in-cheek comment, Western New York has a number of multi-millionaire/billionaire employers like Paladino, from the Rich family to Tom Golisano to the Wegman family in the Rochester area.

To put in perspective (from the other links):
2008: Obama 76.8%, McCain 15.4%
2004: Kerry 72.0%, Bush 20.4%
Pataki got 24.0% with Golisano getting 17.0% in 2002.

Then Paladino's margin in suburban Erie is very impressive: 65.3%-31.3%.

Indeed, every town in Erie County went to Paladino except for Buffalo. He also came less than 100 votes short of winning in Niagara Falls.
