Lodge manages to capture the GOP nomination (taking his "walking for President" excursion to the next level) and Johnson doesn't wage a massive smear campaign on him, unlike Goldwater.

I asked because I wasn't sure if it Lodge v. President Johnson or maybe President Lodge, after something happened to President Nixon.

Ah. No.. everything is the same except the ticket is Lodge/Cooper, and a much cleaner campaign. Map? Smiley

My take: (Without an active 3rd party)

I think this scenario would lead to Faubus (D-AR) running as a states rights 3rd party candidate.
I see a Faubus/Bryant ticket carrying the south, while HCR still gets beaten badly by LBJ

Lodge barely beats a States Rights Wallace/Faubus ticket, while still loosing miserably to Johnson

377-161
in a two-way race, i think Lodge could get about 45% of the vote, but I don't see him being able to take the South away from Johnson the way a more conservative or states-rights candidate could.
