How did Dukakis win it?  Why did people prefer him over Bush?  Was it related to the farmers recession?  Did Bush not focus as much time there?

Or is it a mixture of these factors?

I think it was a combination of these factors. The farmer's recession and the lack of campaigning there gave Dukakis a victory there. The result was still very narrow, though. Bush Sr. wanted to focus on the big states and it paid off for him since he won several large states (IL, CA, etc.) by narrow margins.

The map says a lot on this one:

Declining resource-extraction areas were still pretty damn Democratic, and the Republicans were starting to lose their dominance with the affluent and educated.

I don't know much of the narrative history, or how much the campaigns focused on it, but that's my interpretation of the map.
